摘要: A video image processing apparatus in which an analog video image can be satisfactorily converted to a binary value by calculating theshold values of respective neurons and coupling coefficients of respective synapses of a neural network circuit on the basis of the input analog video image and a pre-determined function.By arranging so a difference component E between the input analog video image and the binary value video image is defined as ##EQU1## where .alpha. is the coefficient, u.sub.(i) is the value which results from converting the input analog video image into the binary value, and P.sub.(i,j) is the value obtained from the function and g.sub.(i) is the value which is obtained from the function and the input analog video image, it is possible to convert the video image into the binary value by the use of the neural network circuit.Further, by setting that the function to have a frequency characteristic of a human's eyes, it is possible to obtain a binary value video image which is excellent from a human's visual standpoint.Furthermore, if the input analog video image is a computer hologram and the function is a window function which indicates a range of a desired video image in a reproduced image which results from Fourier-transforming the computer hologram, the noise in the range of the desired video image in the reproduced video image can be reduced to provide an excellent reproduced image.

摘要: A neural network quantizer for quantizing input analog signals includes a plurality of multi-level neurons. The input analog signals are sampled and supplied to respective ones of the multi-level neurons. Output values of the multi-level neurons are converted into analog values, weighted by weighting coefficients determined in accordance with a frequency band of at least one frequency component of the input analog signals and fed back to the respective one of the multi-level neurons and to the other multi-level neurons. The weighted analog values fed back are compared with the respective ones of the sampled input analog signals. The output values of the multi-level neurons are corrected in response to the compared results, and when the compared results are converged within a predetermined range, the output values of the multi-level neurons are produced to quantize the input analog signals.

摘要: An optical system for reading a plurality of radially contiguous individual holograms previously recorded on a rotatable disk along at least one of the disk tracks, each hologram being representative of a predetermined data pattern, and each being recorded as a Fourier transform hologram with respect tot the direction (y direction) tangential to the tracks and as a Fresnel hologram with respect to the radial direction (x direction), and wherein the optical system illuminates the disk with a read-out beam which is at least partially reflected by the disk to an array of photosensitive detectors which generates electrical data signals. A latch circuit is included for recovering the value of each data signal when the read-out beam completely illuminates one of the holograms.

摘要: A differential interference contrast (DIC) determination device and method utilizes an illumination source, a layer having a pair of two apertures that receive illumination from the illumination source, and a photodetector to receive Young's interference from the illumination passing through the pair of two apertures. In addition, a surface wave assisted optofluidic microscope and method utilize an illumination source, a fluid channel having a layer with at least one aperture as a surface, and a photodetector that receives a signal based on the illumination passing through the aperture. The layer is corrugated (e.g., via fabrication) and parameters of the corrugation optimize the signal received on the photodetector.

摘要: In the present invention, a volume holographic optical element is used as a pump coupler. The holographic coupler allows at least one pump wavelength to be coupled into the laser medium. The direction of the pump beam onto the coupler is not co-linear with the direction of the signal beam out of the coupler. The invention further provides the coupling of more than one pump wavelengths using a single holographic coupler element while maintaining the high isolation between pump and signal beam. The invention further provides a narrow-band reflection grating of various efficiencies for the signal beam (as part of the laser cavity).

摘要: A method of microfluidic control via localized heating includes providing a microchannel structure with a base region that is partially filled with a volume of liquid being separated from a gas by a liquid-gas interface region. The base region includes one or more physical structures. The method further includes supplying energy input to a portion of the one or more physical structures within the volume of liquid in a vicinity of the liquid-gas interface region to cause localized heating of the portion of the one or more physical structures. The method also includes transferring heat from the portion of the one or more physical structures to surrounding liquid in the vicinity of the liquid-gas interface region and generating an interphase mass transport at the liquid-gas interface region or across a gas bubble while the volume of liquid and the gas remain to be substantially at ambient temperature.
