The seal includes a first portion defined by a gel substance. In one embodiment, the seal includes a selectively formable substance adapted to be molded from a first pattern into a second pattern and to retain the second pattern responsive to being so molded. The seal and mask having the seal in this embodiment is tailored to patient by causing the formable portion of the seal to be placed in a malleable state, applying the seal to the patient while the formable portion is in the malleable state, and causing the formable portion to be placed in a fixed state to retain a shape generally conforming to the portion of the patient underlying the seal.

    摘要： A first embodiment of the security apparatus comprises a retaining collar; a plurality of segments forming a generally frusta-conical enclosure, with one or more of the segments having an access opening therein; and a lockable access door covering the opening. The retaining collar is separable into portions that conforms to the shape of the periphery and are coupled together around the structure. The segments have an upper portion that attaches to the collar; and have a bottom portion that extends radically downwardly from the collar at an angle of about 30 degree; with the radial edges interconnected forming the enclosure.A second embodiment of the apparatus secures a ladder supported on a wall and a retaining bar; a plurality of segments forming a generally semi-frusta-conical enclosure, with one or more of the segments having an access opening therein; and a lockable access door covering the opening.

    摘要： Antimicrobial quinolonyl lactam compounds comprising a lactam-containing moiety linked to a quinolone moiety, of the formula: ##STR1## wherein (1) A.sup.1, A.sup.2, A.sup.3, R.sup.1, and R.sup.4 generally form any of a variety of quinolone, naphthyridine or related cyclic moieties known in the art to have antimicrobial activity; and(2) R.sup.6 is part of a linking moiety, linking the quinolone moiety to a lactam-containing moiety having the formula: ##STR2## wherein (3) R.sup.10, R.sup.11, R.sup.12, R.sup.13, and R.sup.14, together with bonds "a" and "b", form any of a variety of lactam-containing moieties known in the art to have antimicrobial activity; and(4) the linking moiety includes (for example) carbamate, dithiocarbamate, urea, thiourea, isouronium, isothiouronium, guanidine, carbonate, trithiocarbonate, reversed carbamate, xanthate, reversed isouronium, reversed dithiocarbamate, reversed isothiouronium, amine, imine, ammonium, heteroarylium, ether, thioether, ester, thioester, amide, and hydrazide groups.

    摘要： Optical pumping devices use light reflected from reflecting surfaces to provide a portion of the light incident on the photodetector. Conventional optical pumping devices experience a decay, over time, of the initial light intensity incident on the photodetector. The optical pumping device of the invention experiences reduced light intensity decay. The invention passivates the reflecting surfaces to eliminate tarnish and oxidation by pretarnishing the surfaces or covering the surfaces with a material whose reflectivity does not vary over time, such as gold.
