A thermal transfer printing method includes the steps of overlapping a surface of a printing layer of an intermediate transfer member having the printing layer on a base member with an ink sheet. Thermal transfer printing from the ink sheet to the printing layer is effected, subsequently overlapping the intermediate transfer member with an image receiver for transfer of the printing layer onto the image receiver. Thereafter, the printing layer is fixed on the image receiver by causing the printing layer to penetrate into the image receiver through direct application of pressure and heat to the printing layer on the image receiver. A printing apparatus is employed for effecting the thermal transfer printing method.

A thermal recording apparatus comprises a thermal recording head supported for movement right towards and away from an intermediate transfer drum. The intermediate transfer drum has a peripheral surface formed with an ink transfer layer of silicone rubber and is supported to be rotated in one direction successively past a recording station at which the thermal recording head is positioned and a transfer station at which an inked image transported by the intermediate transfer drum is transferred onto a recording paper. A heating lamp is installed coaxially inside the intermediate transfer drum for heating the ink transfer layer to a predetermined unique temperature so that the inked image formed on the intermediate transfer drum at the recording station can be transferred onto the recording paper at the transfer station to complete a recording of an image on the recording paper.

In the heating apparatus, when the specific resistance of a material of a heat generating layer of a heating roller is ρ (μ′Ωcm), the average thickness of the heat generating layer is 5ρ (μm) or more but not more than 15ρ (μm), and the thickness error is 1.2ρ (μm) or less. For instance, when the heat generating layer is copper having a specific resistance of 1.7 (μ′Ωcm), the average thickness of the heat generating layer is 8-25 (μm), and the thickness error is 2 (μm) or less. Thus, the heating roller having a short heat increasing time and excellent temperature uniformity is provided.

A heat generating roller, fixing equipment and an image forming apparatus in which warm-up time is shortened while preventing excessive temperature rise and good fixing performance is realized by preventing occurrence of offset. In the heat generating roller, fixing equipment and image forming apparatus, the heat generating roller is formed principally by laying a high permeability conductive layer and a nonmagnetic conductive layer in layer. When a voltage is applied from a power supply (not shown) to an exciting coil and an AC current flow through it, magnetic flux is generated around the exciting coil and a magnetic field is formed. Since the heat generating roller has the high permeability conductive layer and the nonmagnetic conductive layer laid in layer, magnetic coupling of a system consisting of the heat generating roller and the exciting coil is good at the time of low temperature and heat generation of the heat generating roller is accelerated. When the Curie point is exceeded, skin depth becomes deep and skin resistance decreases, which suppresses generation of Joule's heat and reduces heat generation of the heat generating roller.

A complete ink image is formed on a recording paper by stripping off the ink sheet from the intermediate transfer medium while the temperature of the heated ink still remains above the melting point or softening point. These sequential processes are repeatedly executed for plural color inks in the order to form a multi-color ink image on the intermediate transfer medium before transferring the multicolor ink image onto the recording paper.
