The invention describes a redox initiating system consisting of Cu.sup.II salts, enolizable aldehydes and ketones, and various combinations of coordinating agents for Cu.sup.II, coordinating agents for Cu.sup.I, and a strong amine base that is not oxidized by Cu.sup.II. In particular, Cu.sup.II octanoate/dibenzyl ketone/pyridine/triethylamine/triphenylphosphine systems are effective. In addition to initiating free radical polymerizations and copolymerizations, this initiating system can be applied to the synthesis of functionalized telechelics, polymers with ketone linkages in the backbone, block and graft copolymers consisting of free-radical and step-growth polymer blocks, and crosslinking reactions.

A curable composition which comprises:(a) an anhydride-functional polymer obtained by polymerizing under free radical addition polymerization conditions, a monomer mixture comprising:(i) 20 to 75 weight percent of an alkenyl succinic anhydride having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each independently hydrogen or alkyl or substituted alkyl of 1 to about 30 carbons; and(ii) 25 to 80 weight percent of at least one (meth)acrylic monomer copolymerizable with the alkenyl succinic anhydride; and, optionally,(iii) 0 to 75 weight percent of at least one unsaturated monomer, other than a (meth)acrylic monomer, which is copolymerizable with the anhydride and the (meth)acrylic monomer; and(b) a compound having an average of at least two functional groups per molecule which are reactive with anhydride groups.

The invention relates to the use of cobaloximes and related cobalt(II) complexes which have essentially planar equatorially coordinated ligands and a pair of axially coordinated ligands which have at least one carbon-cobalt bond, as photoinitiators for free radical polymerizations. By selection of the appropriate cobaloximes and related complexes, it is possible to prepare polymers which have useful terminal functionality at both the head and the tail ends of the growing polymer chain. The process also teaches the photochemical polymerization and copolymerizations whereby the alkyl cobaloximes and related compounds, which are used as the photoinitiators, have alkyl groups, which may in essence, be polymers with carbon-cobalt chain ends, thereby allowing grafting reactions to occur to the polymer backbone.While it is possible to synthesize the cobaloxime and related compounds initially, for subsequent addition to a monomer, it is also taught within this invention that the cobalt complex can be prepared "in-situ", such as by the routes which include: (1) Cobalt-hydride plus monomer addition; (2) free radical initiator plus monomer plus cobalt complex, the ratio of free radical initiator to cobalt complex being essentially 1:1; and (3) the reaction of Co(II) with an alkyl halide.

A composition and process for making an alternating copolymerization of acceptor monomers such as acrylic acid and derivatives thereof and donor monomers containing free amine groups therein such as an aminostyrene compound. The free amine groups are initially protected by conversion to an imide derivative such as phthalimide, or the like, and then reacted with the acceptor monomers. After copolymerization, the free amine is regenerated. The alternating copolymerization reaction is usually carried out in the presence of Lewis acids which act as complexing agents. The alternating copolymers of the present invention are useful as antistatic agents or as thickening agents as in oil recovery.

Vinyl monomers are polymerized in the presence of bi(phosphine oxides) and bi(phosphine sulfides) which can function as photoinitiators and chain transfer agents in the polymerization of vinyl monomers. The incorporation of such organo-phosphorous compounds into such polymers either as an integral part thereof, or as an admixture, results in improved thermal stability of the polymers.

An improved polymerization process wherein starting material such as monomer, a mixture of monomers, a partially polymerized product, or a mixture of fully polymerized product and monomer or monomer mixture is reacted with an initiator such as an organic peroxide, hydroperoxide or perester and a quaternary ammonium salt under polymerization conditions wherein polymerization or further polymerization of the starting material is initiated. The initiator and quaternary ammonium salt are miscible with the polymerization mixture in the absence of solvent. An improved polymerization process is also provided wherein a crosslinked polymer structure is formed from an unsaturated polymer in a polymerizable monomer.
