A disk drive apparatus and read error recovery method in a disk drive apparatus removes thermal asperities on disk surfaces. A projection, such as a thermal asperity, on the recording surfaces of disks is detected when a signal transducer head contacts the projection. The flying height of the signal transducer head is lowered, e.g., by changing the disk rotation speed from the normal rotation speed in read/write operations or by heating a suspension having a bimetal element, while the signal transducer head is positioned over the detected projection on the track. The signal transducer head strikes the projection to break the projection. This avoids a subsequent error from being caused by the thermal asperity.

A preamplifier circuit to improve the ESD immunity of magnetic recording devices having magnetoresistive (MR) sensors, without degrading the sensor's high-frequency characteristics. The preamplifier circuit is coupled to an MR sensor having one terminal grounded. The preamplifier circuit includes a varistor coupled between a power supply line and a ground terminal. If a high voltage, exceeding the varistor voltage, is applied to the chassis (ground), it is discharged through the varistor between the power supply voltage line and the ground terminal, instead of through the MR head or the arm electronics module. The present invention thereby protects the MR head and the arm electronics module from ESD damage.

A hard disk drive has an enclosure with disk construction members and is characterized by covering the enclosure with an electrically conductive sheet. The electrically conductive sheet protects the drive regardless of which direction an ESD charge is applied. The electrically conductive sheet does not permit ESD to pass through the disk construction members stored in the enclosure. Therefore, it is possible to form a structure in which a GMR head or the like in an enclosure is not damaged due to ESD even if the enclosure is handled by a general end user. Moreover, the present invention relates to an electrically conductive sheet for covering at least both principal planes of the enclosure of a hard disk drive constituted as described above. Other modes of the invention include at least both principal planes of an enclosure being covered by the electrically conductive sheet in such a way that both sheets on both principal planes are electrically connected. In addition, portions where the enclosure contacts the disk construction members on both principal planes may also be covered and electrically interconnected. Furthermore, the electrically conductive sheet may be bonded to the surface of the enclosure by an adhesive, or provided with an opening at a position corresponding to an enclosure portion that must be brought into contact with an external atmosphere.

A magnetic head handling glove capable of preventing the buildup of static charges and electric charge leakage and capable of withstanding use in clean rooms is described. In the magnetic head handling glove 1 of the present invention, the outer surface alone or both the outer surface and inner surface of a conductive glove 2 are coated with dissipative material 3,4. This results in coating of the conductive glove with materials useable in clean rooms and may suppress possible contamination that can result when a conventional conductive glove, lacking in such coating of dissipative material, is used directly in a clean room. Besides this, the conductive glove 2 is configured to be grounded directly with wire 5. In this way, even an operator prone to the buildup of static charges can be sufficiently prevented from building up static electrical charges and electric charge leakage.
