An obstruction perception system for a wheelchair accessible vehicle is provided. The system may embody a sensor, such as a camera, that detects objects entering a safety or safety zone surrounding the vehicle's wheelchair access device, such as a ramp or lift. The system may also include a computing system or controller executing machine learning software/algorithms or other logic/instructions for receiving input from the sensor, determining whether obstructions are present, and taking corrective action to prevent the access device from colliding with the obstruction. The computing system may also provide instructions for aligning the vehicle with wheelchair pick-up locations, ensuring sufficient space is available to deploy the ramp in a parking spot, recording events/incidents, providing feedback to the vehicle operator/passenger, and updating vehicle maps.

The secondary data network may be coupled to the vehicle's OEM CAN bus via a gateway module. The gateway module can receive and selectively recode data from the OEM CAN bus that is relevant to the mobility system and re-broadcast the recoded data on the secondary data. The gateway module may also receive and selectively recode data from the secondary data network that is relevant to the vehicle and re-broadcast the recoded data on the OEM CAN bus.
