摘要: A high throw power electrodeposition system with improved rupture voltage is disclosed. The electrodepositable coating includes an active hydrogen-containing ionic resin and a gamma hydroxy urethane curing agent, such as a curing agent having the structural feature: ##STR1## The gamma hydroxy urethane curing agent can be prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with a 1,3-polyol, and in particular with 2,2,4-trimethylpentane-1,3-diol. The composition can also include a curing agent having an alkyl urethane structural feature which can be the reaction product of a polyisocyanate and a blocking agent which is a fatty alcohol. A method for coating a conductive substrate with the above-described composition is also disclosed. The method includes passing an electric current between the conductive substrate serving as a first anode and a second anode to deposit the composition and the conductive substrate.

摘要: A cationic microgel dispersion and the use of the dispersion in the method of cationic electrodeposition is disclosed. The dispersion is prepared by a process comprising dispersing in aqueous medium a mixture of a cationic polyepoxide-amine reaction product and a polyepoxide crosslinking agent and heating the mixture to a temperature sufficient to crosslink the mixture to form said cationic microgel dispersion. The dispersion can be formulated with ungelled cationic resins to form an aqueous resin dispersion which is suitable for use in the process of cationic electrodeposition providing for improved edge coverage and crater control.

摘要: An electrodepositable primer composition having improved delamination resistance with regard to automotive topcoats is disclosed. The composition is particularly useful in conjunction with topcoats which transmit ultraviolet radiation. The composition includes an ionic resin and a hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) which is preferably a hindered aminoether light stabilizer. A preferred hindered aminoether light stabilizer is bis-(1-octyloxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate. The invention also includes a process for coating a substrate by applying the above-described primer composition and subsequently applying a topcoat. The process can alternatively include applying a standard primer composition to a substrate and subsequently applying a HALS compound to the electrodeposited substrate.

摘要: A method for matching paint on a vehicle, having the steps of receiving in a central computer vehicle identifying information relating to a specific vehicle and a first set of paint color data from a portion of the body of the vehicle. The central computer includes a processor, an electronic storage device in which a database is stored. The database includes vehicle identifying information for a plurality of vehicles, paint color data associated with respective vehicle identifying information, and paint formulations associated with paint color data. Software in the computer determines a best match paint formulation which relates submitted vehicle identifying information and submitted paint data to a paint formulation and compares the matched paint color data to the submitted paint color data so as to establish accuracy data. The accuracy data is applied to the process so as to be implemented in subsequent paint formulation identifications.

摘要: Electrodepositable coating composition bath is prepared and maintained to reduce the growth of bacteria in and around the bath. The composition has dispersed in an aqueous medium a resinous phase, said composition having a pH of at least 5, said resinous phase having basic nitrogen groups which are at least partially neutralized with an acid of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group with one to four carbon atoms. The amount of this acid to neutralize the cationic resinous phase can be an initial amount greater than 90 of the milliequivalents of sulfamic acid based on the total milliequivalents of neutralizing acid in the bath for the electrodeposition coating of articles in the bath. Also, the bath is maintained by post addition of sulfamic acid to a level of greater than 80 weight percent of the milliequivalents of neutralizing acid when the bath has less than or greater than 90 weight percent of the milliequivalents of neutralizing acid in the bath as sulfamic acid.

摘要: A computer implemented method for matching paint on a vehicle, having the steps of receiving in a central computer, from a remote terminal, vehicle identifying information relating to a specific vehicle and a first set of paint color data from a portion of the body of the vehicle. The central computer includes a processor, an electronic storage device in which a database is stored. The database includes vehicle identifying information for a plurality of vehicles, paint color data associated with respective vehicle identifying information, and paint formulations associated with paint color data. A first process by software in the computer determines a first best match paint formulation which relates submitted vehicle identifying information and submitted paint data to a paint formulation. The software in the computer determines a first best match paint formulation which is transmitted to the remote terminal. The central computer receives a second set of paint color data from the remote terminal representing a surface of the specific vehicle painted with the first best paint formulation and compares by a second process the second paint color data to the first paint color data so as to establish accuracy data. The accuracy data is applied to the first process so as to be implemented in subsequent paint formulation identifications.
