A magnetic reproducing apparatus which has a pair of main rotatable heads having different azimuth angles and a pair of auxiliary rotatable heads having different azimuth angles. When a magnetic tape is played back while it runs at a speed different from that at which it runs during a recording mode, playback output signals from the main and auxiliary rotatable heads are switched over to replace a reduction in the outputs from the main rotatable heads with the outputs from the auxiliary rotatable heads to produce a combined playback output signal. The combined playback output signal is passed through a variable delay line having a delay time varied by an output from a detector circuit which detects variations in horizontal synchronous signal intervals of the combined playback output signal. This varied delay time of the variable delay line can eliminate any skew distortions which would appear on a displayed image on the screen due to the variations in horizontal synchronous signal intervals of the combined playback output signal.

A video signal processing apparatus incorporates a 1H or 2H delay circuit, wherein H is a horizontal synchronization period. The output of the delay circuit is fed back to the input thereof so as to average the noise, thus raising the signal S/N ratio. The feedback line includes a nonlinear processing circuit which has a small gain when the signal input has a low vertical correlation, whereby the signal S/N ratio is improved without causing the delay of the color signal in the vertical direction nor the deteriorated resolution of the luminance signal.

A frequency demodulation circuit superposes pulses on an input frequency-modulated (FM) signal at substantially the peaks of the FM signal before demodulating the FM signal so that zero cross points of the FM signal can be correctly restored. A peak detection circuit detects peaks of the FM signal or peaks of the fundamental wave of the FM signal, which substantially correspond to the peaks of the FM signal. A pulse generating circuit generates, from the peak detection result, pulses respectively occurring at the same timings as those of the detected peak occurrance timings. The generated pulses are added to the FM signal to obtain the pulse-superposed FM signal.

A tracking-error correcting system in a rotary head magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus in which reproducing magnetic heads are mounted on a respective bimorph leaf having piezoelectric elements so as to be movable in the direction of the axis of rotation. The piezoelectric elements are controlled by a control voltage which is produced by adding a signal from an auto-tracking circuit and a signal from a triangular wave generating circuit. In a reproducing mode at a tape speed which is different from a tape speed in recording mode, this system activates the auto-tracking circuit when the control voltage level is within a limited range which is detected by a control voltage detector. Also, this system stops the auto-tracking circuit during a transition period when the reproduction mode changes.

A PLL circuit for a phase comparator, a low-pass filter (LPF), a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and a frequency divider. A first control circuit is responsive to a discontinuous phase change of a reference signal of the PLL circuit for inhibiting the operation of the phase comparator or disconnecting the LPF from the phase comparator during a predetermined period so that the discontinuous phase change information is not transmitted through the LPF to the VCO. At the same time, a second control circuit resets the frequency divider by a pulse of the reference signal after the discontinuous phase change or applies a voltage corresponding to the discontinuous phase change to the VCO so that the output signal of the frequency divider is locked in phase to the reference signal after the discontinuous phase change. With the cooperation of the first and second control circuits, the PLL circuit quickly recovers its stable state after the discontinuous phase change of the reference signal.

A video signal recording/reproducing apparatus includes a first set of rotary heads mounted on a rotary disk and a second set of rotary heads mounted on head actuators which are also mounted on the rotary disk. The apparatus has two reproduction modes. A magnetic tape in the first reproduction mode is driven at a speed equal to the speed used in a recording mode. The magnetic tape in the second reproduction mode is driven at a speed which is different from the speed used in the recording mode. The apparatus has a negative feedback loop which detects the reproduced signal level of the second set of rotary heads and drives the head actuators in order to increase the reproduced signal level of the second set of rotary heads. In the first reproduction mode, the negative feedback loop is intermittently closed. At the period of time when the negative feedback loop is open, the negative feedback loop holds the value of its output signal to that of the last time period when the negative feedback loop was closed, and, in addition, the head actuator is not driven when the feedback loop is open. At a transitional period when the apparatus switches from the first reproduction mode to the second reproduction mode, a holding signal from the negative feedback loop is supplied to the head actuator.

In the skip reproduction from a frame X in a first access unit (XGOP) to a frame Y in a second access unit (YGOP), a reproduction method stores a front data and the data onward YGOP while display of frame X is maintained. Then, a front frame (I-picture) and onward is decoded and displayed in YGOP. Another reproduction method decodes the front frame (I-picture) to the frame Y in YGOP, and keeps on displaying the frame X instead of displaying the decoded frames until the frame Y is decoded. At the time when the frame Y is decoded, display of the coded frames starts. A further reproduction method does not decode the bi-directionally predictive coded frames between the front frame and the frame Y in YGOP. These respective methods can improve accuracy of a reproduced motion in the skip reproduction and reduce a freezing time of displaying a picture from which the skip starts.

A waveform improving apparatus improves the contour of a waveform of a first signal which has a reduced frequency band by using a control signal generated from a second signal which has a correlation to the first signal. A waveform adjusting circuit increases the level of the first signal waveform at the rising slope portion thereof and decreases the level of the first signal waveform at the falling slope portion thereof to obtain a waveform-adjusted first signal. A control pulse generating circuit differentiates the second signal twice to obtain a control pulse having a predetermined duration and terminating at the center of a slope portion of the first signal waveform. A sample/hold circuit is responsive to the control pulse for sampling a level of the waveform-adjusted first signal and holding the sampled level during the duration of the control pulse thereby obtaining a waveform improved first signal.

Furthermore, the input signal may be passed through another delay circuit before being supplied to the operational circuit for outputting the output signal so that an undesired time delay produced within the filter can be compensated for.
