A biosensor of the present invention is provided with an insulating base plate, an electrode system mainly consisting of a working electrode and a counter electrode formed on the insulating base plate, and a reaction layer on the electrode system. The counter electrode is partially a circular arc. A manufacturing method of the biosensor of the present invention is comprised of a step to form a base by arranging leads, an electrode system, and an insulating layer on an insulating base plate, and a step to form a reaction layer mainly composed of an enzyme on the electrode system. Since the counter electrode is partially in the shape of a circular arc, the reaction layer is easily formed and prevented from delaminating, whereby the measuring accuracy, preservative properties and reliability of the biosensor are improved. The present invention enables highly efficient biosensors to be mass produced at low cost.

The subject invention provides a simple sensor and an easy to handle biosensor measuring apparatus for the purpose of making measurements easily, rapidly and with high accuracy for specific components within a biological specimen such as blood.The biosensor of the subject invention is provided with a protrusion or a depression in a portion of a base having at least a measurement electrode and an opposing electrode. Also, the biosensor measuring apparatus is so configurated to have a mating means in the main body of the measuring apparatus freely supporting this biosensor to contact the said sensor's protrusion or depression, and further having the activating switch of the driving power supply located in this mating means.By means of these, it is possible to prevent wasteful measuring operations, as noted in the prior art biosensors, such as inserting the sensor backwards and making measurements with the sensor inserted backwards.

The present invention relates to a process of preparation of a biosensor comprising forming an electrode system mainly containing carbon on an insulating base plate, treating the surface of electrode system with an organic solvent, and then arranging a reaction layer on the electrode system to give a unified element. The reaction layer contains an enzyme, electron acceptor and a hydrophilic polymer. Treatment with the organic solvent improves adhesion of the reaction layer to the electrode system. The electrode system contains a working electrode and a counter electrode. The electrode system is formed from a carbon paste containing a resin binder. Treatment is preferably carried out by wiping the surface of the electrodes with a material impregnated by the organic solvent.

As the conventional simple bio-sensors for measuring the particular component in living bodies, there are those in which a change in dye caused by enzyme reaction is detected optically, but such bio-sensors had a problem that precision is low owing to disturbance of the color of liquid samples. With bio-sensors using an enzyme electrode, the precision was high, but operation of measurement was troublesome. The present invention made it possible to detect the concentration of the particular component electromechanically with rapidity, simplicity and high precision by merely putting a porous substrate containing at least enzyme on the electrode system and impregnating the body with a liquid sample.

Several simple biosensors for measuring a specific component in a liquid sample are known including a sensor of the type in which a change of a dye formed by an enzyme reaction is optically detected and a sensor of the type using an enzyme electrode. These sensors, respectively, involve an interference with colored matters in liquid sample and necessity of washing of an electrode system every measuring procedure. In addition, the sensors are complicated in structure and materials therefor are expensive. In the present invention, the electrode system is formed mainly of carbon and is integrally combined with the perforated body, so that washing of the electrode system is unnecessary. Thus, an inexpensive, simply-operated biosensor of the disposable type can be provided.

One of the pair of substrates is provided with projecting and depressed portions covered with a metal film and with a support portion for supporting the counter substrate, which are molded integrally.
