Abstract: The present invention provides a method for reshaping up a cone-like electrode which is made of a refractory metal containing silicon. The method comprises the following steps. A surface of the cone-like electrode is subjected to an oxidation of silicon which is contained in the refractory metal. The oxidation is generated at rates which increase toward a top portion of the cone-like electrode. As a result, a silicon oxide film is formed, which coats the cone-like electrode. The silicon oxide film has thickness which gradually increase toward a bottom portion of the cone-like electrode. An interface between the silicon oxide film and the cone-like electrode has sloped angles which increase toward the top portion. The silicon oxide film is removed to thereby expose a reshaped cone electrode which has a sharply pointed top. The reshaped cone electrode has a surface having sloped angles which increase toward the sharply pointed top.

Abstract: In order to heat a field emission type cold cathode 10 of a cathode ray tube, which generates electron beams, to a temperature high enough to obtain a desired electron emission characteristics of the field emission type cold cathode even when an inner temperature distribution of an evacuating furnace 20, which includes furnace temperature setting heaters 21 and a vacuum pump 23, is not uniform, the field emission type cold cathode 10 of an electron gun 3 of the cathode ray tube, which is provided within a neck portion 2a of a bulb 2 of the cathode ray tube, is locally heated by a neck heater 22 detachably mounted on an outer peripheral surface of the neck portion 2a while the bulb 2 is being evacuated.

Abstract: The present invention provides an electron gun assembly including at least one field emission type cold cathode acting as an electron beam source, a support for supporting the cold cathode thereon, a control electrode spaced away from the cold cathode, the control electrode cooperating with the support to enclose the cold cathode therein, a thermal shield member provided both around the control electrode and below the support to prevent heat conduction to the cold cathode. The thermal shield member does not allow heat conduction to the cold cathode when the electron gun assembly is to be enclosed in a glass valve by softening a neck portion of the glass valve with an oxygen burner and then attaching the softened neck portion to the electron gun assembly, resulting in that an emitter of the cold cathode is not increased in temperature and that a summit of an emitter is not oxidized. Thus, the work function of the cold cathode is not increased, and thereby there can be obtained a cathode ray tube including a field emission type cold cathode in which the emission performance is not degraded.
