NOVEL COPOLYMERIZATION PRODUCTS ARE PROVIDED BY THE CATIONIC POLYMERIZATION OF A DI-(DIHYDROPYRANYL) COMPOUND WITH A SUBSTITUTED 1,3-DIOXOLANE OR A SUBSTITUTED 1,3-DIOXANE. THE COPOLYMERIZATION PRODUCTS POSSESS IMPROVED ABRASION RESISTANCE AND TOUGHNESS AS COMPARED WITH THE HOMOPOLYMERS OF THE DI-(DIHYDROPYRANYL) MONERS. ESPECIALLY USEFUL, PARTICULARLY IN PROVIDING FOAMED POLYMERIC MATERIALS OF IMPROVED FRIABILITY RESISTANCE, ARE THE POLYMERIZATION REACTION PRODUCTS OF 3,4DIHYDRO-2H-PYRAN-2-METHYL(3,4 - DIHYDRO-2H-PYRAN-2-CARBOXYLATE) AND A BIS-DIOXOLANYL OR A BIS-DIOXANYL CARBAMATE.

OXYALKYLATED DERIVATIVES OF A 3 - CYCLOHEXANE-1,1-DIMETHANOL AND A 3,4-DIBROMOCYCLOHEXANE-1,1-DIMETHANOL ARE PROVIDED WHICH ARE USEFUL POLYOLS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF POLYMERIC COMPOSITIONS INCLUDING POLYURETHANES. ALSO PROVIDED ARE POLYMERIC COMPOSITIONS TO WHICH FLAME-RETARDANT PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN IMPARTED BY THE INCORPORATION THEREIN OF A 3,4-DIBROMOCYCLOHEXANE-1,1-DIMETHANOL, AN OXYALKYLATED 3,4-DIBROMOCYCLOHEXANE-1,1-DIMETHANOL, OR A COMBINATION THEREOF. THE DIBROMO-CYCLOALIPHATIC DIOLS OF THE INVENTION ARE ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE FORMATION OF FLAME-RETARDED POLYURETHANES INCLUDING CELLULAR POLYURETHANES AND, IN PARTICULAR, FLEXIBLE FOAMS.

THE HALOGEN-SUBSTITUTED AROMATIC AMIDE-ESTER POLYOLS OF THE INVENTION ARE USEFUL IN IMPARTING FLAME-RETARDANCY TO ORGANIC POLYMERS NORMALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO BURNING INCLUDING POLYURETHANES SUCH AS, IN PARTICULAR, FLEXIBLE POLYURETHANE FOAMS.

This invention is directed to the new compound, 2,3dihydroxyprop-1-yl 2,3,7,8-tetrabromooct-1-yl ether, and to flame-retarded polymeric compositions having said compound incorporated therein. The tetrabromooctyl ether diol is employed with particular advantage in the formation of flame-retarded cellular polyurethanes including self-extinguishing flexible foams.

POLYMER COMPOSITIONS NORMALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO BURNING ARE RENDERED FLAME-RETARDANT BY THE INCORPORATION THEREIN OF 1,2,5,6-TETRABROMO-3,4-DIHYDROXYHEXANE. IN PARTICULAR, A HIGHER MELTING STEREOISOMERIC FORM OF THE LATTER COMPOUND PROVIDES ESSENTIALLY SCORCH-FREE, SELF-EXTINGUISHING POLYURETHANE FOAMS WHICH EXHIBIT A GOOD OVERALL COMBINATION OF PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES.
