摘要: A extracorporeal system for lung assist includes a housing, a blood flow inlet in fluid connection with the housing; a blood flow outlet in fluid connection with the housing; a plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers adapted to permit diffusion of gas between blood and an interior of the hollow gas permeable fibers, the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers being positioned between the blood flow inlet and the blood flow outlet such that blood flows around the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers when flowing from the blood flow inlet to the blood flow outlet; a gas inlet in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with inlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers; a gas outlet in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with outlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers; and at least one moving element to create velocity fields in blood flow contacting the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers may extend generally perpendicular to the direction of bulk flow of blood through the housing.

摘要: An extracorporeal system for lung assist includes a system housing, which includes a blood flow inlet and a blood flow outlet and a fiber bundle housing movably positioned within the system housing. The fiber bundle housing includes a gas inlet and a gas outlet. A fiber bundle is in operative connection with the fiber bundle housing. The fiber bundle includes a plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers, wherein lumens of the plurality of hollow gas fibers are in fluid connection with the gas inlet at a first end thereof and in fluid connection with the gas outlet as a second end thereof. The system further includes an actuator to impart oscillatory motion to the fiber bundle housing and thereby to the fiber bundle.

The device has a cartridge; a plurality of hollow fibers extending within the cartridge from an entrance to an exit thereof; an amount of an oxygen scavenger packed within the cartridge and contiguous to and in between the plurality of hollow fibers. The hollow fibers are adapted to receiving and conveying red blood cells. There is another embodiment of an oxygen depletion device and method for removing oxygen from red blood cells.

摘要: A method of reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in blood plasma includes removing blood from a patient and treating or processing at least blood plasma of the blood by flowing the blood plasma on one side of at least one semi-permeable membrane and flowing a dialysate on the other side of the at least one semi-permeable membrane. The dialysate has a concentration of bicarbonate less than the concentration of bicarbonate in the blood plasma before treating the blood plasma and has a composition such that the blood plasma strong ion difference that results from treating the blood plasma in conjunction with an achieved reduction in blood plasma CO2 concentration results in a blood plasma pH that does not change by more than +/−0.5 during treatment.

The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers is adapted to permit diffusion of gas between blood and an interior of the hollow gas permeable fibers. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers is positioned such that blood flows around the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers when flowing through the fiber bundle compartment. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers extend generally perpendicular to the direction of bulk flow of blood through the fiber bundle compartment from the flow channel to the blood flow outlet. The system further includes a gas inlet in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with inlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers and a gas outlet in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with outlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers.

摘要: A method of modifying cells includes removing fluid including cells from a patient, contacting the removed fluid from the patient with at least one surface upon which at least one agent to interact at least one cell receptor is immobilized to modify cells in the fluid, and returning the fluid to the patient. The agent can, for example, be immobilized via covalent bonding or ionic bonding to the at least one surface. The fluid can, for example, be blood or a blood fraction. The agent can, for example, be an agonist, an antagonist or an inverse agonist.

摘要: An extracorporeal gas exchange device includes a housing, a rigid shaft rotatable within the housing, a plurality of agitation mechanisms positioned on the rigid shaft, and a plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers adapted to permit diffusion of gas between fluid flowing within the housing and an interior of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers are positioned radially outward from the plurality of agitation mechanisms. The rotational speed of the rigid shaft is adjustable independent of the flow rate of fluid through the housing.

摘要: An extracorporeal system for lung assist includes a housing having a blood flow inlet in fluid connection with a pressurizing stator compartment within the housing. A fiber bundle compartment within the housing is above and in fluid connection with the pressurizing stator compartment via a flow channel formed within the housing and extending from the pressurizing stator compartment to an inlet manifold of the fiber bundle compartment. A blood flow outlet in is fluid connection with an outlet man fold of the fiber bundle compartment. The blood flow inlet extends through the housing parallel to a plane of rotation of an impeller in the pressurizing stator compartment. The blood flow inlet turns to deliver blood into a central portion of the impeller. A has inlet is in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with inlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers of a cylindrical fiber bundle positioned within the fiber bundle compartment. A gas outlet is in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with outlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers.
