An improved piston-type fluid-blast circuit interrupter is provided having a stationary operating cylinder, within which reciprocates a movable piston assembly carrying the movable contact assembly of the interrupter. Electromagnet means including three accelerating coils, one movable with the piston assembly, another located in the closed end of the operating cylinder, and a third coil movable with a driver unit, are all connected in series during the opening operation of the interrupter. The driver unit is mechanically connected through the closed end of the operating cylinder with the movable piston assembly. The magnetic attraction between the piston coil and the coil at the closed end of the operating cylinder, and the magnetic repulsion forces between the coil at the closed end of the operating cylinder and the coil carried by the driver unit, all contribute to magnetically assisting the fluid-driving motion of the piston assembly and so effecting interruption. The movable contact structure comprises a main movable contact and an inner movable arcing probe movable together and insulated from each other with the three accelerating coils connected between the main movable contact and the movable arcing probe in the closed position of the interrupter.

A dual-acting piston operable within an operating cylinder is mechanically connected to the moving contact structure of a circuit breaker. The piston has a portion constantly acted upon in the closing direction by a high-pressure operating fluid. A large portion of the piston structure is at low pressure, and the opposite face of the piston structure is alternately pressurized or exhausted to effect, respectively, an opening or a closing operation of the circuit breaker. A portion of the piston structure fits into a recess thereby affording a shock-absorbing function during the closing operation. Another portion of the piston structure traps highpressure operating fluid so as to constitute a shock absorber during the opening operation of the interrupter. In the case that a gas is used, which tends to liquefy, provision is made for the removal of the liquefied gas during the operation of the mechanism.

An operating mechanism for a circuit breaker is provided having a rotatable main lever, which is rotated to a closed position by an actuator, such as a piston, movable within a cylinder, and is maintained in the closed position by a latching device, such as a collapsible linkage maintained in its extended position by a magnetic trip device. The arrangement functions, during an opening operation, to actuate the tripping device, which permits collapse of the linkage and opening rotative motion of the main lever. During a subsequent closing, the piston device provides the energy for rotating the main lever to its closed position against the opposition provided by accelerating springs, and the collapsible linkage maintains the main lever in the closed position by the magnetic trip.

The movable orifice structure has a movable probe, which connects into the series electrical circuit a movable radial magnetic field coil, which causes a rotation of the established arc around a conducting ring incorporated into the orifice structure. The combination of the rotating arc and the gas blast through both a side vent and an axially disposed orifice effects quick extinction of the established rotating arc.
