Abstract: An apparatus for flattening junked vehicles having a rectangular bed and a crushing head pivoted to swing downwardly and crush flat a vehicle positioned on the bed. The swinging movement is accomplished by a first long throw hydraulic ram, which moves the head through most of its arc, and a second shorter hydraulic ram which engages the head and adds its force to that of the first ram in urging the head downwardly through the final stages movement of the head so as to overcome the increased resistance to crushing encountered as the vehicle body is progressively flattened. Manually operable valving means is provided for effecting the sequential action of the rams.

Abstract: A flush tank valve having a plunger and two converging passages. One passage is vertical and the plunger operates in it and the other passage goes off to the side and handles the discharge. The plunger opens by withdrawal beyond the discharge passage. The plunger has a packing moving with the plunger and spring compressed so that in closed position it engages the wall of the body close to the upper end of the valve, but in open position it engages the wall of the body beyond the branching of the Y. There is also a packing gland sealing the lower end of the plunger and compressed by spring means, acting between the plunger and an enlarged portion of the body and entirely independent in its operating parts from the packing at the upper end of the plunger. A scraper ring is preferably employed ahead of the packing on the plunger to remove material adhering to the inside wall of the body. In one embodiment the plunger upper head interferes with an extension from the valve seat to compress the seal ring.

Abstract: An apparatus which incorporates a thermistor mounted in a stub axle being specially modified by the presence of an axial bore therein wherein the thermistor is positioned within the axle at a point between the bearing surfaces on the exterior thereof and further incorporating a conductor line which extends to an indicating apparatus located elsewhere. Abstract: A machine for flattening junked automobiles includes a relatively lightweight but rigid horizontally extending rectangular flattening head mounted for up and down movement over a rigid, comparatively lightweight horizontal flattening bed, with such movement being effected by hydraulic rams mounted at the corners of the generally rectangular flattening head. The head may be lifted enough to accommodate, between the head and the bed, one or more flattened automobiles plus one automobile to be flattened, so that a plurality of automobiles may be flattened between unloadings. The flattening mechanism is mounted on a highway trailer, and vertically disposed hydraulic rams force the head downwardly on their retracting stroke so that the height of the rams, and consequently the height of the overall unit, will be at a minimum, within Federal and State maximum highway transport height limitations, when the head is in its downmost position. In one form of the invention, the hydraulic cylinder bodies are attached to the flattening head and the remote ends of the piston rods are secured to the vehicle. In a modified form, the hydraulic cylinders are fastened to the vehicle and the remote ends of the piston rods are secured to the flattening head.
