An electrode system for preventing biofouling of a surface either is applied directly onto the surface of an aquatic vehicle or structure, if the surface is non-conducting; or is applied onto an insulating paint layer on the surface, if the surface is conducting; or is embedded in a layer of electrically non-conducting material. The electrode system includes two alternating sets of electrodes in the form of spaced, parallel strips made from any conductive material, preferably a conductive coating, the first set being provided with a number n of parallel electrodes, and the second set being provided with a number n−1 of parallel electrodes, with the positions of the electrodes of the first set alternating with the positions of the electrodes of the second set. The geometry of the electrodes is such that when the voltage is applied, the electric field radiates outwardly parallel to the surface of the structure. All of the electrodes of both sets preferably are of substantially equal length, and the electrodes of each set preferably are of substantially equal width. The electrodes of the first set can be the same width as the electrodes of the second set, or a different width. In a method for preventing biofouling, the electrode system is used to apply a pulsed voltage to a surface.

A coating composition having outstanding electrically conductive and electromagnetic radiation absorptive properties is disclosed with a water emulsion polymer binder. The binder is a blend of a first emulsion containing a conjugated diene as monomer or comonomer, and a second emulsion containing an acrylic, aliphatic or aromatic polyurethane, polyester urethane, polyester, epoxy, polyamide, polyimide, vinyl, fluoropolymer, or silicone polymer. An effective amount of electrically conductive and electromagnetic radiation absorptive particles is dispersed in the binder. The particles include a combination of graphite particles, carbon nanotubes and metal containing particles. An effective amount of water is also present.

An antenna (100) applied to a structure (200), the antenna (100) comprising a series of conductive and dielectric coatings. A conductive coating backplane or ground plane (110) is applied to a substrate structure (200), a non-conductive dielectric coating (120) is applied over the outer surface of the conductive coating backplane or ground plane (202), and a conductive coating patch, microstrip array or radiating element (130) is applied over the outer surface of the dielectric coating (120b). The pin of a coaxial cable (304) extends through the conductive coating backplane (110), the dielectric coating (120), and the conductive coating patch (130), for transmission of a signal from the antenna (100). The method allows for the non-destructive application of antennas on existing platforms for receiving and transmitting electromagnetic signals.

Apparatus for releasable attachment to articles to be monitored by a surveillance system of type involving radiant energy transmissions into an area of interest. The apparatus includes: an attachment device for effecting releasable attachment of the apparatus to an article and having an electrical switch with first and second states corresponding respectively to attachment thereof to the article and to release thereof from attachment; an alarm unit operable for generating an output indicative of an alarm condition; a receiver for receipt of radiant energy transmitted messages; and control circuitry connected to both the attachment device and the receiver for response to the attachment device switch second state and to messages received by the receiver for operating the alarm means to generate output indicative of an alarm condition. The apparatus may further include a negator unit for removing the alarm unit from generation of the alarm condition.
