An electroforming process is used to prepare a thin, deformable metal member by immersing an electrode having an outer surface with an undulating cross-section of hill-like and valley-like shapes in an electroforming bath. The hill-like shapes are narrower than the valley-like shapes, and, in a preferred embodiment, the bottoms of the valley-like shapes are electroformed to be thinner than the tops of the hill-like shapes. The metal member is useful as a spring in a fluid bearing such as an air bearing.

The belt can be made by an electroforming process. While electroforming, at least one operating parameter selected from bath temperature, current density, agitation, and stress reducer concentration is adjusted to cause the internal stress to gradually increase, compressively, from the radially inner surface of the belt to the radially outer surface of the belt. The internal stress preferably increases at a substantially constant rate and may range from about 160,000 psi tensile at the inner surface to about 120,000 psi compressive at the outer surface.

This process may be carried out in an apparatus which includes at least one member having an arcuate surface with a small radius of curvature, means to transport the belt photoreceptor in an arcuate path over the arcuate surface, and abrasive means adapted to to contact and remove substantially all of the photoconductive layer from the substrate.
