According to a junction FET of the present invention, the depth of a channel region is made shallow by selectively performing ion implantation and diffusion. Since the channel region forms a pn junction together with a p type semiconductor layer with relatively low impurity concentration, the improvement in the high frequency characteristic and the reduction in the amount of the leakage current because of the reduction in a junction capacitance can be achieved. Moreover, the depth of a gate region is also made shallow by ion implantation, and thus the reduction in noise because of the reduction in the internal resistance can be achieved.

A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display, includes the steps of: forming thin film transistors TFTs, pixel electrodes connected to the TFTs, and electrode lines connected to the TFTs, respectively on a surface of a first substrate; forming a common electrode on a surface of a second substrate which is not subjected to any orientation process, the first substrate having no orientation means; forming an orientation film on the common electrode on the second substrate and performing a rubbing process only on the orientation film on the second substrate wherein the first substrate is not subjected to a rubbing process; disposing the first and second substrates to face each other and to be spaced apart from each other by a predetermined distance, and injecting a nematic liquid crystal material that is in an isotropic phase thereof, which is heated to at least a phase transition temperature that provides an isotropic phase of said liquid crystal material, said liquid crystal material being injected in between the first and second substrates; and gradually cooling the heated liquid crystal material to a temperature at which the isotropic phase changes to a nematic liquid crystal phase. Cooling occurs in a direction from the second substrate toward the first substrate.

To a low-molecular liquid crystal compound, a chiral compound, and a specific acrylate and a polymerizable liquid crystal compound as polymerizable acrylate compounds are added, to prepare a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition. By subjecting the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition to ultraviolet exposure while maintaining a desired alignment state to form a polymer chain in a liquid crystal phase, a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal display device containing a low-molecular liquid crystal in a stabilized alignment state is obtained.

A liquid crystal display cell is provided having high-speed response, wide angle of view, bistable memory properties and high contrast and applicable to large-screen display. The liquid crystal display cell includes a pair of substrates with transparent electrode film and a liquid crystal, at least one of the substrates having a transparent electrode film, a transparent film and an alignment layer laminated successively on a surface of a substrate. The pair of substrates are arranged at a given distance in such a manner that the transparent electrode films face each other and the liquid crystal are enclosed in a gap formed between the pair of substrates with transparent electrode film, wherein (i) the transparent film comprises a matrix (A) and ion-adsorbing inorganic oxide fine particles (B), (ii) the ion-adsorbing inorganic oxide fine particles have an average particle diameter of 1 nm to 50 nm, (iii) the alignment layer has an average surface roughness of not more than 7 nm, and (iv) the liquid crystal is a ferroelectric liquid crystal or an antiferroelectric liquid crystal.
