摘要: A single crystal growing method for producing a high-quality and large-diameter single crystal of a compound semiconductor with a good yield, is disclosed.A volatile element 2 is first put into a reservoir portion 1A of a quartz ampule 1. Further, a crucible 4 made of pBN, which contains a raw material 3A of a compound semiconductor, is placed in the quartz ampule 1, the vacuum sealing of which is then performed. While a vapor pressure controlling operation is performed, a furnace temperature distribution is controlled in such a manner that a vertical first temperature gradient .alpha. .degree. C./cm) in the vicinity of an outside wall of the quartz ampule corresponding to a raw melt 3B is smaller than a vertical second temperature gradient (.beta. .degree. C./cm) in a range above the top end of the crucible 4 and simultaneously, the temperature is gradually lowered. Furthermore, .alpha. ranges from 51/D.sup.2 to 102/D.sup.2 .degree. C./cm, and preferably ranges from 58/D.sup.2 to 83/D.sup.2 .degree. C./cm (incidentally, the diameter of the single crystal is D cm). Additionally, .beta. ranges from 1.06.times. to 1.72.times..degree. C./cm, more preferably, ranges from 1.19X to 1.46X .degree. C./cm ( incidentally, X is given by the following equation: X=.sqroot. R.rho./.lambda.nL), where the cooling rate of the furnace temperature and the coefficients of thermal conductivity, the specific gravity, the latent heat of melting and the formula weight of the crystal are assumed to be R .degree. C./hr, .lambda. kcal/cm.multidot.hr.multidot.K, .rho.g/cm.sup.3, L kcal/mol and n g/mol, respectively).

摘要: There is provided with an optical recording medium comprising at least a dye-containing recording layer and a reflective layer laminated on a transparent substrate in this order which has a reflectance of 65% or higher, measured through the substrate, to a light beam having a selected wavelength (.lambda.1) of from 770 to 830 nm and has a reflectance of 15% or higher to a light beam having a selected wavelength (.lambda.2) of from 630 to 690 nm and which is recordable and reproducible with a laser beam having the wavelength of .lambda.1 and being reproducible with a laser beam having the wavelength of .lambda.2. In addition, the recording layer has a dye A having the absorption maximum at the wavelength shorter than 630 nm mixed with a dye B having the absorption maximum at the wavelength of from 630 to 900 nm. Alternatively, an interference layer is provided along with the recording and reflective layers. The recording layer is based on a phthalocyanine dye while the interference layer is based on an inorganic dielectric, a polymer, or an azo dye. The requirements for the interference layer are also provided.

摘要: A low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp forms an electric discharge path by the use of a bulb placed on an end plate and the bulb is formed by a process which results in the connecting outer side surfaces of juxtaposed glass tubes through communication holes formed in the outer side surfaces respectively. The process involves placing the juxtaposed glass tubes so that their outer surfaces are opposed in a contacting state. A portion of each of the glass tubes is heated in order to form a communication hole through the utilization of a burner inserted through an open end into the interior of each of the glass tubes in order to cause fusion of that particular portion in each tube to thereby form the communication hole by wind pressure. A mass of molten glass is then forced outward at the outer peripheral edge of the communication hole whereby these outer peripheral edges of the glass tubes are mutually connected by the mass of molten glass and the open end of the tubes are then closed to form a U-shaped passage between the tubes.
