摘要: A neural lead and method of treating neurological disorders by stimulation of the cerebral cortex of the brain is provided. The lead is designed for reduction of strain between the lead body and the lead paddle caused by the position of the lead body above the cranium and the lead paddle beneath the cranium. The lead is also designed to include a two dimensional chronic electrode array for better stimulation coverage of the target area of the cerebral cortex. A method of treating a neurological disorder by stimulating the cerebral cortex is also presented.

摘要: The disclosure describes an introducer for facilitating implantation of therapy elements into a patient. The introducer has an elongated body that defines a lumen for advancement of a therapy element to an implant site, and includes a curved portion medially located between substantially straight proximal and distal portions. As an example, the shape of the introducer may allow a clinician to more easily, and without substantially damaging surrounding tissue, find the correct tissue depth and follow that tissue depth to the implant site. For example, the introducer may facilitate implantation of a therapy element within or between desired layers of tissue of the patient. In some embodiments, fluid may be injected through the introducer to create a space within the tissue to implant the therapy element. Fluid may also be evacuated through the introducer prior to implantation.

摘要: Implantable lead assembly including a lead body, an elongated conductor, a coiled electrode, and a tether line. The lead body maintains the conductor. The electrode is coupled to the conductor, defining proximal and distal ends. The tether line defines a trailing segment and a leading segment terminating in a leading end. The tether line is coupled to the coiled electrode at a point proximal the distal end, and the leading end extends distal the distal end. With this configuration, a pulling force applied to the leading segment is transferred to the electrode at a point proximal the distal end as a pushing force, thereby minimizing an opportunity for overt stretching of the coiled electrode during implantation. The lead assembly can further include a needle connected to the tether line.

摘要: A connector assembly for interconnecting separate sections of tubing, e.g., catheters, and a method for using the same. Connector assemblies in accordance with embodiments of the present invention may be a two-piece construction having a connector pin and a strain relief device. The strain relief device, in addition to providing secure, substantially leak-free coupling of the tubing sections, may also provide strain relief to the tubing interconnection.

摘要: There is disclosed a surgical lead comprising two percutaneous lead bodies bonded together. The inventive lead body results in the equivalent of a surgical lead body with columns of electrodes either adjacent to or offset from each other. A bridge of urethane material is used to bond together the percutaneous lead bodies and still provide suitable flexibility of the lead. The surface of the electrodes may be coated, in part, with a suitable non-conductive coating to effectively direct the electrical stimulation signals toward the targeted stimulation area. Significantly, the resulting lead is sized to fit within a needle having a similar cross-section, thereby permitting the percutaneous implantation of the inventive lead.

摘要: Electrical lead wire connection to a tape electrode is disclosed. Such electrodes are used for transmitting electrical signals through skin. The tape electrode includes a porous substrate material carrying a conductive layer comprised of finely divided silver metal suspended in a "dry" adhesive. An electrical lead wire is connected to the conductive layer of the tape electrode by a flat cover member having the same conductive layer on both sides thereof as is carried by the substrate of the tape electrode. One of the conductive layers of the cover member secures the lead wire to the conductive layer of the tape electrode. The other conductive layer of the cover member intimately contacts the skin along with the conductive layer of the tape electrode to provide for good electrical contact therewith when the tape electrode is applied thereto. The adhesive is normally "dry" and is activated at the time of application by a suitable solvent.

摘要: The disclosure describes an implantable medical lead for delivering stimulation to a patient. Electrodes may be located on two or more surfaces of the lead to, for example, selectively deliver stimulation to one or more tissue layers within the patient. The lead may be implanted within or between intra-dermal, deep dermal, or subcutaneous tissue layers, and may be used to, for example, deliver peripheral nerve field stimulation to treat pain experienced by the patient at the site at which the lead is implanted. The lead may comprise a paddle lead or a multiple level lead, e.g., a lead having a plurality of flat or paddle shaped lead bodies arranged in substantially parallel planes. Further, the lead may include fixation structures on the distal end, proximal end, or both ends to prevent migration.

摘要: The present invention provides for an improved apparatus and method for electrical stimulation. A paddle having a thickness up to 0.030 inches is implanted adjacent the spinal cord dura mater to reduce the likelihood of paralysis due to stress on the spinal cord attributed to bulkier leads. The paddle is then positioned so that at least one of a plurality of electrodes is positioned over the area of the spinal cord requiring pain treatment; and then electric stimulation is applied to the electrodes to effect pain treatment. In another embodiment the paddle is curved about a vertical axis to substantially match the shape of a human spinal cord dura mater to help reduce lead migration.
