A method of making nanostructures using a self-assembled monolayer of organic spheres is disclosed. The nanostructures include bowl-shaped structures and patterned elongated nanostructures. A bowl-shaped nanostructure with a nanorod grown from a conductive substrate through the bowl-shaped nanostructure may be configured as a field emitter or a vertical field effect transistor. A method of separating nanoparticles of a desired size employs an array of bowl-shaped structures.

Provided herein are novel phosphors useful in the manufacture of white light emitting diodes. The phosphors provided by the invention are described by the formula: SrxBayCazSiO4:Eu in which x, y, and z are each independently variable to be any value between about 0 and about 2, including without limitation 0.001 and 2, and every thousandth therebetween, subject to the proviso that the sum of x, y, or z is equal to at least 1, and in which Eu is present in any amount between about 0.0001% and about 5% by weight based upon the phosphor's total weight, wherein substantially all of the europium present is present in the divalent state. A phosphor according to the invention may optionally further comprise an element selected from the group consisting of: Ce, Mn, Ti, Pb, and Sn and is present in any amount between about 0.0001% and about 5% by weight based on the phosphor's total weight. The silicate phosphor materials provided by the present invention do not require the addition of dissimilar blue and red phosphor compounds, and do not contain zinc and/or magnesium. In addition, the present invention provides materials which emit a broad yellowish color containing both green and red emissions. Standard techniques used in phosphor deposition for the manufacture of light emitting diodes which comprise phosphors may be employed to produce LED's having a white light output when the phosphors of the invention are utilized.

The compositions comprise a first component described by the formula: M1SxSey:B1 and a second component that comprises a material described by the formula M2Am(SpSeq)n:B2, in which: M1 and M2 may be any metal species and B1 and B2 may be any activator, typically a metal species, with the remaining variables representing effective numerical values necessary for conferring electrical neutrality to the compositions. A phosphor mixture according to the invention is produced by first preparing individual components, and then physically mixing the components, as in a mortar or ball mill.

A device and method for emitting output light utilizes a mixture of Group IIB element Selenide-based phosphor material and Group IIA element Gallium Sulfide-based phosphor material in which the Group IIA element includes Calcium, Strontium and/or Barium to convert some of the original light emitted from a light source of the device to longer wavelength light to change the optical spectrum the output light. Thus, the device and method can be used to produce white color light. The mixture of Group IIB element Selenide-based and Group IIA element Gallium Sulfide-based phosphor materials is included in a wavelength-shifting region optically coupled to the light source, which may be a blue light emitting diode (LED) die.
