Low voltage logic circuitry is used to permit an entire subsystem of an industrial controller to be placed within a hazardous environment to receive a high speed serial link and undertake the control of multiple control points without expensive and awkward long cable runs and electrically isolating circuits for each cable run. Energy and bandwidth limiting on the high speed link allows power levels commensurate with high data rates yet intrinsic safety of the media allowing it to freely pass in and out of the hazardous area. A mixture of intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe equipment on the same logical rack is allowed through a bus isolator providing isolated data communication in backplane fashion between modules while wholly isolating power transmission along the backplane.

A multiphase circuit interrupter includes a plurality of power phase sections for establishing and interrupting electrical power carrying paths for a plurality of phases. Each power phase section includes first and second conductive regions which contact one another to complete the current carrying path for the phase. The second conductive region is movable to an interrupted position to interrupt the path. An interphase current carrying path is established between the power phase sections to conduct electrical energy between the sections following a trip event in any one of the sections. The interphase current carrying path may be established by a conductive element extending between the power phase sections. Channels may be formed in the interrupter housing between the power phase sections to communicate conductive plasma generated during separation of the contact regions from one another between the power phase sections. The electrical energy conducted between the sections increases the rate at which the arcs are extinguished, contributes to protection of the load downstream of the device and results in more rapid interruption of power through all power phase sections.

A movable element supporting the movable contact is displaceable between a conducting position wherein the movable contact abuts a cooperating contact to complete a current carrying path through the device, and a non-conducting position wherein the movable contact is electrically separated from the cooperating contact. In accordance with the method, the movable contact is displaced by an interrupt initiation device, and a carrier or retainer is displaced by gas pressure resulting from arcs generated by movement of the contact. The carrier is guided in its displacement within the device housing from a normal operating position to a retaining position. The carrier includes an abutment element that physically contacts the movable element to prevent it from rebounding into contact with the cooperating contact.

The double RESURF structure can be provided by a buried oxide layer, a floating doped region, or a horizontal PN junction. The pass-through table indicates data used in common between the centralized controller and the distributed controller and monitors a link connecting the distributed controller for changes in variables on the pass-through table to write those changes to the I/O table of the centralized controller. Conversely, changes in the I/O table of the centralized controller are detected and transmitted out to the common link to the distributed controller.

Updating of the secondary processor's I/O data table is accomplished synchronously with execution of the program in the primary processor at a particular point in the program. A tracking of changes in the I/O data table of the primary processor is used to transmit only changes in the I/O table to the secondary processor thereby avoiding undue interruption of the executing program while preserving synchronicity.
