The surface acoustic wave device provides an excitation in an upper limit mode of a stop band of the surface acoustic wave.

The multilayered phase difference plate obtains a high incident light polarization conversion efficiency because the respective plate thicknesses of the first and second phase difference plates are within a range such that phase difference deviation amounts become offset by each other.
