Abstract: A filter for a hydraulic system which filter is mounted within the reservoir containing the hydraulic fluid supply. The filter comprises a yieldably mounted cylinder element that is normally biased towards a closed filtering position, said filter element being adapted to yield to an open position at such times as porous side walls of the filter element become clogged to the extent that a predetermined back pressure is imposed by the filter element on the flow passing therethrough. The apparatus is further characterized by a filter condition sensing and indicating means that senses only that pressure build-up within the filter element which is caused by clogging of the porous walls of the element. Hence, false condition indications due to flow surges inherent in filtered systems are eliminated.
