A stereotactic device of simplified structure, adaptable to align and precisely orient a variety of medical devices such as differently sized needles, cannulas and guide wires into the human body for procedures such as tumor biopsies, percutaneous discectomies, cyst aspirations and tumor localizations is described. The device described is adapted for use in combination with a stereotactic bridge comprised of a span rotatable on its horizontal axis and movably affixed to a C.T. scan table or X-ray table by positioning means providing vertical and horizontal movement of the span. The described device is interactive with a C.T. scanner to achieve accurate placement of the oriented medical device. Use of the stereotactic bridge allows alignment of medical devices in sagittal orientation with a high degree of accuracy.

A device and process for measuring cervical range of motion about three axes comprises an eyeglass frame which is supported on the nose and ears of a patient. A pendulum angle finder and a compass and the pendulum is mounted a horizontal axis and the compass needle is mounted about a vertical axis. The angle finder and compass are mounted on the eyeglass frame with a clamp that permits rotating the angle finder 90.degree. to permit measuring angles about two mutually perpendicular axes in the horizontal plane to permit tri-planar angle measurements. The angle finder and compass can be adjusted to a zero position and cervical range of motion is then measured through the use of angle indictor scales provided on the angle finder and compass. Readings may be made about one, two, or all three axes of rotation.

A bone biopsy arrangement especially suited for use in obtaining axial skeleton trephine samples from the spinal vertebra centrum of a living test specimen in a safe and rapid manner. The disclosed arrangement uses radiographic mapping, precise mechanical control of the trephine with an apparatus disclosed in detail, conventional trephine energizing and a test speciment such as a rhesus monkey. Improved quality plural samples from a single test subject that were heretofore considered too inaccessible and dangerous for practicality are achieved.

The method and apparatus are presented which allow for CT guided biopsies of the body. The method is based on the finding of a reference point on the patient's body that exactly correlates to a point on the CT scan. This is accomplished by means of a localization device placed on the patient's skin which can be identified in cross section on the CT scan. Measurements of the localization device on CT scan can then be correlated to the device on the patient.

A device for measuring rib hump angle in the diagnosis of scoliosis, which comprises a frame, a plurality of stiff, laterally spaced parallel finger-like members arranged in pairs along one side of the frame with the two members of each pair equally spaced on opposite sides of the centerline of the edge, and frictionally slidable on the frame parallel to the centerline of the edge, so that when the frame edge is transverse and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the spine each finger-like member can be pushed into contact with the back. Means are also provided on the frame to measure the angle subtended between a first line perpendicular to the movement of the fingers and a second line intersecting the first line and passing through a selected point on the highest finger on the "high" side of the spine and the corresponding point on the other finger of the pair on the other or "low" side of the spine, so that rib hump angle can be measured directly.
