Abstract:
The present document describes a system and a process for the extraction of several products from apple peel. There are several unit operations involved including an ultrafiltration unit, concentration unit, and a three stage counter current separator centrifuge wherein water is used as the solvent. The final products that are extracted from apple peel include pectin, syrup, fibers, as well as soluble and dried retentate fractions.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for extracting high-quality polyisoprene by grinding plants via rotary shearing using a device comprising at least one rotor and at least one stator, into particles of size smaller than 1 mm, or grinding at a pH higher than 3 and lower than 8. This method is implemented in aqueous phase and allows the preparation of a dispersion of polyisoprene in water having a weight average molecular weight (MW) higher than 800 000 g/mol. The polyisoprene is extracted from plants and in particular from guayule (Parthenium argentatum). It is a method that is particularly heedful of the environment.
Abstract:
A biomass fractionation apparatus includes a vessel having a processing chamber, an inlet configured to receive a biomass into the processing chamber, and an outlet configured to discharge processed biomass from the chamber. A bed plate is movably positioned within the processing chamber and includes a plurality of elongated fins extending outwardly therefrom in substantially parallel spaced-apart relationship. A cylindrical rotor is rotatably secured within the processing chamber in adjacent, spaced-apart relationship with the bed plate. The rotor has a plurality of elongated blades extending radially outwardly therefrom in circumferentially spaced-apart relationship. Upon rotation of the rotor, the blades are configured to accelerate a biomass within the processing chamber against the fins of the bed plate and to cause the bed plate to pulsate against the rotor.
Abstract:
A device for continuously decaffeinating raw coffee includes a first extractor having at least one cell for use in a first treatment stage where raw coffee is preswollen by a swelling fluid that is added to the raw coffee. The at least one cell receives the raw coffee that is to be preswollen and is defined by a bottom and a plurality of sidewalls that extend towards one another to define a wedge-shaped cell. Additional similarly shaped cells and receiving chambers positioned below the cells may also be provided with a perforated bottom separating each cell from its respective receiving chamber.
