摘要:
The invention generally relates to a facility wide sorting and/or sequencing system for improving product processing operations and, more particularly, to a facility wide system and related functionality for simultaneously sorting and sequencing mixed mail pieces such as, for example, flats and letter mail pieces. The flats and letter mail pieces are placed in frames so that all types of mail pieces can be sorted and/or sequenced simultaneously through merging and diverting a stream of filled trays into and out of different streams at a full or substantially full transport speed.

A flat mail edge biasing machine and method of use for separating stacks of bulk flats (products) into at least two separate stacks each with bound edges oriented in a same direction. The flat mail edge biasing machine has a feed head mechanism which is capable of detecting a bound or non-bound edge of the product, and sort the products based on the detection. The sorting includes moving the products from a center compartment to side compartments. In the side compartments, the products stacks with the bound edges oriented in a same direction.

To identify the orientation of specified documents, such as checks bearing magnetic ink markings, steps are taken to magnetize ink markings associated with the document, and to then detect magnetized ink markings on the document to develop electrical signals which can then be subjected to processing for identifying the orientation of the document based upon certain preestablished criteria. The result is a stand-alone device adapted to operate upon documents which are contained within envelopes to be subjected to an extraction procedure, prior to extraction from the envelopes, achieving a pre-processing of envelopes to identify those which contain the specified documents, and the orientation of the identified documents. The device is similarly adapted to operate upon the extracted documents, to identify those requiring special handling, and their orientation.

A postal material reading apparatus is provided with a mechanism for obtaining an image signal which represents a visual image of the surface of postal material. A detector is provided responsive to that image signal for identifying an area of that image which contains an edge mark that may interfere with orientation analysis of the image. A detector is also provided responsive to the identification of that area for analyzing the image signal for only that portion of the image signal which represents the image outside the area in which the edge mark was detected, to determine the orientation of the postal material. In the preferred embodiment, a histogram is used to identify the area of the image which contains the potentially interfering edge mark.

A device for classifying handled objects. This device comprises a mechanical sorting system and an electronic control system. The former comprises two storage devices, each organized in the form of a queue or line, i.e., the objects can be removed in the order in which they are entered, and a third storage device organized in the form of a stack or pile, i.e., the objects can be removed in the opposite order to that in which they entered. The mechanical system also comprises conveyors for transferring the objects between the different storage devices. The electronic system comprises a control computer, equipped with two memory zones organized in the form of a queue, and a third memory zone organized in the form of a stack, in which are stored the codes allocated to each object. The computer controls the transfer of codes from one memory zone to another, in order to sort in one of them the codes in a given order, and controls the corresponding displacement of the objects carrying the codes.

To process large stamped letters, machine readable large letters are placed with the stamp facing upwards in a sorting station on a conveying means that leads them to further processing stations, has a reference edge in the conveying direction and is inclined in the conveying direction. The letter edge parallel to address lines, in proximity of which the stamps are located, rests against the reference edge. The stamps are automatically cancelled by a canceling device arranged over the leading-away conveying means and at a lateral spacing from the reference edge which corresponds to the spacing of the stamps from said letter edge. The large letters are then rotated through 90° as they are conveyed onwards with the shorter letter edge resting against the reference edge, by a locally fixed rotation element, so, like the standard letters, they rest with their longer letter edge on the reference edge, as is required for further processing.

A series of documents to be processed are optically inspected, and compared with a reference standard to identify the relative orientation of each document. To this end, an image acquired from the document (preferably from each side of the document) is focused on an array of picture elements (pixels) for electronically converting the acquired image to digital form. This produces a digitally encoded image, which can be enhanced if desired, defined by an array of pixels corresponding to the acquired image. For each acquired image, two reference areas, which are preferably symmetrically located on the document, are inspected for the presence of a pre-selected reference mark. Location of the reference mark in one of the two reference areas operates to determine the orientation of the document. Upon locating the reference mark on the document, identifying the orientation of the document relative to the apparatus, the document may then be mechanically re-oriented so that the documents are placed in a uniform orientation for further processing, if desired.
