    摘要: A device for aligning flat objects includes a supporting device, two boundary elements, a drive for the backwards and forwards movement of the boundary elements and a motor. The supporting device has two flat aligning surfaces for aligning the objects, wherein the aligning surfaces lie in two planes that abut each other at a straight edge. Both aligning surfaces slope steeply towards the edge. The motor sets both aligning surfaces in vibration. Both boundary elements can be swiveled into an engaging position. In this engaging position, the at least two boundary elements hold the stack of the objects when the stack is located on the supporting surfaces and between the boundary elements. The drive is connected to the boundary elements in such a way that it moves the boundary elements backwards and forwards parallel to the edge when the boundary elements are in the engaging position.

    摘要: A method and device are disclosed for orienting flat items of mail towards a narrow edge in a U-shaped conveying channel in which they are conveyed in an upright position and without being jammed. Before the items pass the conveying channel for the purpose of alignment, their thickness is measured. The distances of the lateral limit stops or limiting sections are changed by means of adjusting mechanisms for every item of mail in such a manner that at the end of the conveying channel, the item is oriented towards its lower narrow edge by virtue of its own gravity and the distance of the lateral limit stops of the conveying channel from every item of mail during transport through the conveying channel is only wide enough for the item not to collapse at all nor to collapse partially even if its intrinsic stiffness is poor.

    摘要: Alignment mechanism for processing documents having a plurality of rotating rollers extending upward from the floor of a horizontal tray which is provided with a longitudinal edge. The axes of the rollers are positioned at approximately 75.degree. angle with respect to the longitudinal edge. A plurality of balls are located above the rollers with one or more balls associated with each roller. The documents pass between the rollers and the balls for moving the documents toward the longitudinal edge and simultaneously toward a read station located adjacent an end of the longitudinal edge. Two pairs of rollers, and upper and lower baffles cooperate to vertically align documents of different thicknesses with respect to the read station.

    摘要: A series of documents to be processed are optically inspected, and compared with a reference standard to identify the relative orientation of each document. To this end, an image acquired from the document (preferably from each side of the document) is focused on an array of picture elements (pixels) for electronically converting the acquired image to digital form. This produces a digitally encoded image, which can be enhanced if desired, defined by an array of pixels corresponding to the acquired image. For each acquired image, two reference areas, which are preferably symmetrically located on the document, are inspected for the presence of a pre-selected reference mark. Location of the reference mark in one of the two reference areas operates to determine the orientation of the document. Upon locating the reference mark on the document, identifying the orientation of the document relative to the apparatus, the document may then be mechanically re-oriented so that the documents are placed in a uniform orientation for further processing, if desired.
