A lining for metallurgical purposes comprises 80 - 90 wt.% of aluminum waste metal, 1 - 19 wt.% of fibrous filler, 1 - 10 wt.% of binding agents, such as phenoplasts or aminoplasts and up to 1 wt.% of wetting agent. The lining may be adapted for specialised purposes by replacing up to a quarter of the aluminum waste metal by additional constituents suited to the required purpose. The lining may be made by a dry process in which dry flakes of the composition are pressed to a desired shape or by a wet process in which the aluminum waste metal is added to an aqueous mixture of the fibrous filler and wetting agent whereafter the other constituents are added. Refractory, insulating and exothermic linings are described.

The liner composition comprises by weight from 7-10 percent asbestos, from 7-12 percent wood flour, from 41-51 percent sand, from 26-32 percent silica flour and from 5-8 percent resin binder; and the refractory ring composition comprises by weight from 4.5-5.5 percent low water content asbestos, from 4.5-5.5 percent high water content asbestos, from 84-87 percent sand and from 4.5-6 percent resin binder.

This invention relates to exothermic and insulating sleeve mixes comprising (1) a sleeve composition comprising stabilized hollow aluminosilicate microspheres, and (2) a chemically reactive binder. Sleeves are formed from the sleeve mix and are cured in the presence of a catalyst by the cold-box or no-bake curing process. The invention also relates to a process for casting metal parts using a casting assembly where the sleeves are a component of the casting assembly. Additionally, the invention relates to the metal parts produced by the casting process.

An exothermic composition comprises a mixture of finely divided oxidizable metal, e.g. aluminium and/or magnesium, an oxidizing agent therefor which includes a water-soluble oxidizing agent, and a water-permeable organic fibrous material, e.g. cellulose fibre (paper pulp, waste paper), wood fibre, sawdust or peat, in which part at least of the water-soluble agent is absorbed. The water-soluble agent is preferably a nitrate or chlorate, and iron oxide or manganese dioxide may be included. Refractory fillers (e.g. asbestos, glass fibre, slag wool, grog, sand, Chamotte, furnace aggregate), fluorides, e.g. one of those mentioned in Specification 627,678, and a binder (sulphite lye, gums, bentonite, natural or synthetic resin) may be included, and preferred ranges (percentages by weight) of all the components of the mixture are given. The composition is made by forming an aqueous slurry of the components and draining the liquid through a wire mesh which retains the solids to form a shaped body which is dried.
