    摘要: A purge dam assembly confines a volume within an assembly of pipes, including a distal pipe and a proximal pipe together arranged for butt welding at a seam. A distal disk is covered at its periphery with a distal sock including gasketing material. A proximal disk is covered at its periphery with a proximal sock including the gasketing material. Each disk is sized such that the sock contacts but does not completely seal against an inner surface of one of the tubes or pipes permitting a purging flow of gas from the volume and past each disk. A cross-member having a proximal and a distal end, the proximal end is affixed to the proximal disk and the distal end is affixed to the distal disk to preserve the spatial separation between the proximal disk and distal disks and to maintain the proximal and distal disks in coaxial alignment.

    摘要: A self-adhesive purge dam for retaining purge gas around a weld zone includes a base configured to substantially obstruct an air passage leading to the weld zone and an adhesive skirt extending from the base and configured to engage portions of the air passage. An adhesive on the adhesive skirt allows the skirt to be adhered to the air passage. An optional removable backing covers the adhesive prior to installation. The adhesive skirt is deployable from a stowed position wherein the adhesive is generally disposed in an interior portion of the purge dam to an installation position wherein the adhesive can be pressed against a surface to which the purge dam is to be adhered. The purge dam can be installed by inserting it in the air passage with the adhesive skirt in the stowed position, removing the removable backing prior to or after insertion in the air passage, exposing the adhesive, and deploying the skirt to the installation position for adhesion.

Respective arrays of wedges are axially displaceable on the surfaces so that as the arrays are displaced apart the respective wedges move radially outward. Respective springs engaging the arrays urge the respective jaws radially together and urge the respective arrays axially toward each other. An abutment between the arrays has annular end faces engageable axially outward with the respective wedges. Thus when the bodies are drawn axially toward each other and the respective wedges are forced radially outward so that, when the arrays are flanking a joint and displaced radially outward, they coaxially center and lock together the pipe ends.

    摘要: Improved welding method and padeye processing speeds up the connection of individual joints by peripheral fusion welding while the joint to be added stands vertically atop an existing pipe string also standing vertical in the rig floor. A plurality of welders can operate to speed up completion of the weld by removing heat from the pipe during the welding process. Heat is removed by the use of fluid cuffs near the weld area and, optionally, by using a spool within the pipe string to dispense expansion cooled air against the inner pipe wall in the vicinity of the weld. A special improved padeye is provided for welding near the pipe ends for handling. The padeye has a divided profile, a hole for a lifting shackle, and it will be accepted within the skirt of the lead system of the driving hammer. The upper end of the padeye can be cut from the pipe while the pipe is resting, on rig related structure, on the lower surface of the padeye.

    摘要: A purge gas unit establishes an enclosed zone for purge gas within tubes or pipes having portions which are to be joined by welding. The purge gas unit includes a first bladder to be positioned on one side of the welding location and a second bladder positioned on the other side of the location. A purge gas supply tube extends through the first bladder and has an opening near the second bladder through which purge gas is supplied to the weld zone or space between the bladders. A vent tube extends through the first bladder and communicates with the weld zone near the first bladder and with a space beyond the first bladder. A safety cable also is attached to the second bladder and extends at least substantially through the first bladder, with the cable enabling the purge unit to be removed from the tubes after welding. The bladders can have annular chambers with central passages through which elongate members can extend. The bladders, in another embodiment, can be substantially flat when not inflated.
