Abstract:
A carton blank support member is mounted above a traveling carton blank in a folder gluer machine. The support member is cyclicly driven between an inoperative position above the carton blank to an operative position engaging the top surface of the blank adjacent a score line formed in the blank. The score line defines a flap which is folded upwardly when the support member is in engagement with the top surface of the carton blank to form a side wall of the carton. The support member prevents the flap from buckling during the folding operation, especially when recycled paperboard is used as the carton blank.
Abstract:
A case making machine is provided with an apparatus for folding rear portion of a feeding case blank and the apparatus comprises a claw mechanism for folding the rear portion of the case blank along the folding line. The claw mechanism is rotated at an angular speed which is changed by a cam mechanism operated by a driving source through a drive shaft and a link mechanism. An electromagnetic valve is further provided for controlling the operation of the claw mechanism. The valve is actuated by an electric circuit such that the electromagnetic valve can be operated in synchrony with the advancing speed of the blank. This result is achieved by increasing pulse numbers inputted into the circuit to account for the rise time interval of the electromagnetic valve.
Abstract:
A paperboard tray forming machine is disclosed which is designed for forming a paperboard tray from a flat production blank. The paperboard tray has front and rear end panels hingedly attached to side panels by means of folded gusset corner panels. The tray further has folded over corner flaps hingedly attached to the gusset panels and upwardly turned top flaps hingedly attached to the front and rear end panels. The machine is formed in a plurality of stations designed to take a paperboard flat production blank from a hopper and to fold the tray into the finished shape through a series of folding and glueing stations in the machine. The path of travel through the machine is in a generally U-shape. The various folding and glueing stations are positioned around an endless traveling conveyor having a plurality of mandrels attached thereto. The carton blank advances first in one direction and then turns in a U-shaped path and advances in the opposite direction. The folded carton is then stripped from the mandrel to be passed to a filling station forming no part of the invention.
Abstract:
Apparatus for folding the trailing edge of paperboard blanks conveyed along a straight-line path includes a rotatable shaft disposed below and transverse to the conveyor and having arms with heads at their ends which extend upward through openings between conveyor belts. The shaft is rotated to cause the heads to contact the trailing panels or flaps of the blanks and fold them onto the blank body. To rotate the shaft intermittently it is momentarily connected to a continuously rotating drive by a clutch-brake which permits substantially instantaneous engagement and disengagement. The precise position of each blank is determined by a signal generated by a photodetector, and the rotational orientation of the shaft is determined by optical detectors associated therewith. A signal from the photodetector indicating position of the blank is received by a controller which also has input of the conveyor speed and which responds by actuating the clutch-brake at the proper time.
Abstract:
The device for turning a front panel of a platelike workpiece within a folder-gluer comprises a retaining plate 20 extending across and somewhat above the traveling plane of the workpiece and a series of lifting fingers 30 positioned transversely below the travelling plane and somewhat upstream of the retaining plate 20. The lifting fingers are actuated by a piston from a resting position below the travelling plane to a raised slanted raised position, at the arrival of the blank's front panel. The front panel includes a partially separated flap that must be parted. The device also comprises at least one pusher 40 that is substantially perpendicular to the plate 20, the pusher 40 being actuated by an actuator 44 in order to separate the flap when the panel reaches maximum height against the plate 20.
Abstract:
A device for folding a rear flap on a box blank characterized by the rotating members and their shaft being mounted in a cradle which is shifted in the frame relative to the path of the blank having the flap being folded. The shifting of the cradle is controlled by a stepping motor. The rotation of the folding members, as well as the position of the drive shaft for the folding members is controlled in accordance to the position of a hitting point of contact for the ends of the hook members with the flap relative to the creasing line.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for forming a reinforced half-slotted container in which each of the side walls is formed by outer side wall and a reinforcing panel which is the same size and height as the outer side wall. The reinforcing panel is attached to the outer side wall along a score line at the top of the outer side wall.In the method, either the two interior reinforcing panels or the two exterior reinforcing panels are adhered to their outer side walls and then the other two reinforcing panels are adhered to their outer side walls. The container is then formed in the normal manner to fasten the glue joint to the opposite side wall. The apparatus has a first forming station in which the interior reinforcing panels are glued, folded over and adhered to the outer side walls, and a second forming station in which the exterior reinforcing panels are glued, folded over and adhered to the outer side walls. In the first forming station, the conveyors and hold down means act against the exterior panels and walls, and in the second forming station the conveyors and hold down means act against the interior panels. The reinforcing panels are the leading panels through the apparatus. The device for folding the reinforcing panels back upon the outer side walls is a simple spring mounted arm and detent. The order of the forming station may be reversed.
Abstract:
Apparatus for folding collapsible box blanks transversely to a feed direction in which blanks are fed to strip-like tools each pivoted about an axis above a conveyor on which the blanks are supported, and transverse to the feed direction and having a sliding surface forming a ramp which rises from the conveyor in the feed direction downstream of the said axis. Unlike known apparatus, a movable depressor is provided to hold down the blank in the vicinity of the tools and further the folding tools are not driven. In the embodiments described they are restrained by a spring loaded locking device, against free pivotal movement until the torque applied to the tool during feeding of the blank, exceeds a predetermined minimum. In one embodiment, the folding tools are movable in the same direction as the conveyor but at a higher velocity, the resultant relative velocity determining the feed direction.
Abstract:
An apparatus for producing a carton whereby the carton is initially obtained in the folded condition for storage and handling and whereby the carton can then be unfolded for use. The apparatus is designed for handling different types of blanks which, generally speaking, include a plurality of panels comprising side, top and bottom panels of the carton. The bottom panels are provided with flaps, and a first folding structure is provided for folding the bottom panels over onto adjacent side panels. Simultaneously, second folding means serve to fold flaps over onto the associated bottom panels, and adhesive applying means serve to locate adhesive on the blanks in selected positions. A third folding means folds the outside ends of the blank over onto the inside portions of the blank at which time folded flaps become adhesively secured. Additional adhesive or other handling means secure the outside ends of the assembly together whereby a flat condition of the carton is obtained. The carton can then be unfolded when ready for use and will automatically assume a position for loading.
Abstract:
Blanks (13) for the production of hinge-lid packs (10) with rounded longitudinal edges (11, 12) are pre-shaped in the region of the longitudinal edges (11, 12). For this purpose, a shaping station (17) is provided, which has two shaping devices (28, 29) which each have shaping tools for pre-shaping the longitudinal edges (11, 12). The centrally supplied blanks (13) are alternately fed to the one and the other shaping device (28, 29), and discharged after shaping.
