Abstract:
A gumming roll preferably for use with apparatus for applying gum to blanks and pertains has gear driven rollers and the rollers are in skidding contact for returning excess adhesive to an adhesive pan without substantial foaming of the adhesive. The gumming apparatus speed of operation is greater than the conventional apparatus in which adhesive foaming is a problem.
Abstract:
A method and adhesive pattern for reverse folding and sealing a carton that enables the carton to be sift proof, the method including providing a carton having a first open end including first and second inside and outside major flaps and a pair of opposing minor flaps. The minor flaps and outside major flap are initially folded in an open position and the first inside major flap is folded to cover the open end of the carton. Multiple beads of adhesive are then applied with a non-contact application head to selected areas of the first inside major flap, the second outside major flap and both of the minor flaps. The minor flaps are then folded on top of the first inside major flap and the second outside major flap is folded on top of the minor flaps to provide sealing contact between the flaps about the entire periphery of the first open end so that the carton is sift proof.
Abstract:
Blanks (10) for hinge-lid packs are provided with glue in the form of glue spots (29a to 29i). A plurality of rows (33 to 36) of the glue spots are distributed over the blank (10) in such a manner that the pack collar (84) and the inner wrapping (82) are sufficiently fixed, and that a lid inner tab (22) is permanently connected to a lid front wall (20). The glue spots (29a to 29i) are applied by a gluing unit (37) which can be removed as a unit from the packaging machine and which is connected to a glue container via a main glue line (56).
Abstract:
An ultraviolet radiation absorbing agent for bonding to an ocular lens. The agent has the formulaA--NH--Bwherein A is an ultraviolet absorbing compound and B is a specific reactive group or a moiety containing reactive group.
Abstract:
A carton glue monitoring system includes a conveyor moving a plurality of cartons in a first direction. An encoder provides pulses at a rate proportional to conveyor line speed. A glue applicator applies a glue strip having a fluorescent material added thereto to the cartons on the conveyor. A glue check station includes a UV source for illuminating the fluorescent material in the glue and a UV sensor for sensing the fluorescent material. The glue station further includes a glue skip detector and an excess glue detector for generating a glue flag and for holding the glue flag until the carton exits the glue station. A glue shift register includes Y registers and is connected to the UV sensor and the encoder for shifting the glue flag in the Y registers. Y is proportional to the encoder rate and a distance between the rejection marking device and the glue station exit minus the carton length. The glue shift register outputs the glue flag to the rejection device after the glue flag is shifted in the Y registers. A rejection device includes a carton sensor and a rejection shift register having Z registers. The rejection device is connected to the encoder and the glue shift register. The rejection shift register shifts the glue flag Z times wherein Z is proportional to the carton length. The rejection device stamps or kicks the carton when the glue flag is shifted through the Z registers.

Abstract:
A gumming device for applying adhesive on to cardboard blanks on a packing machine, on which the blanks are fed crosswise in relation to their longer axis by a suction roller the surface of which presents transverse projections which cause the blanks to flex in such a manner as to expose only given portions requiring adhesive to the action of a gumming element substantially tangent to the aforementioned suction roller.
Abstract:
An applicator assembly for applying hot melt adhesive to a substrate such as the end flaps of a sift-proof carton includes slot nozzles employing elongated, wear-resistant doctor blades formed with a fluid discharge slot. The doctor blades, preferably in the form of hardened steel plates, are releasably clamped to the body of the applicator in communication with the outlet of an internal passageway in the applicator body which receives adhesive from a flow control device such as an adhesive gun. The plates forming the doctor blades are separated by a shim to define the fluid discharge slot into which the adhesive flows from the internal passageway. The lowermost ends of the doctor blades are formed in various configurations to spread the adhesive in the desired pattern or thickness on the substrate depending upon the type of adhesive employed or the requirements of a given application.
Abstract:
Folding blank processing apparatus with scarifying means to scar, or distort, the surface of the paper or board of the blank to produce pock marked surface scarring on the blank adjacent a score line fold for the purpose of holding adhesive at the scarified area to complete the construction of a box, or other means, out of the folded blank.
Abstract:
Feedstock is delivered perpendicular to the line of applied glue in an automated gluing machine, thereby simplifying operation and better accommodating other in-line factory or assembly processes. The machine comprises an input nip for receiving the head end and the tail end of a sheet stock in overlapping registration, with the tail end being longer than the head end. A clamp mechanism holds the overlapping sheet stock in position while a glue applicator applies glue to one side of the tail end. An output nip holds the glued side of the tail end against the head end, and apparatus is provided for ejecting the sheet stock once the tail end has been glued to the head end. The glued stock may be ejected back toward the operator or away from the operator and through the machine, enabling the machine to be placed in-line with other machines for a continuous directional or linear flow.
