A sealing jaw assembly for a sealing unit, and in particular an arrangement for suspending a sealing jaw in a socket is disclosed. The arrangement is based on a first and a second spring arrangement wherein the action of the first spring arrangement onto the sealing jaw may be activated and deactivated.

A sealing device is set forth which assists in overcoming the foregoing problems. The sealing device includes a first sealing jaw for sealing a fin of the gabled container. A second sealing jaw is disposed opposite the first sealing jaw. Both the first and second sealing jaws include a generally flat face portion. The second sealing jaw further includes a sealing bar extending from a mid-region of its generally flat face portion lengthwise along at least a portion thereof for sealing the fin of the gabled container with, for example, ultrasonic energy. A ridge extends respectively from each of the generally flat face portions at a position to form a fin base crease at the base of the fin, for example, over the existing weak crease at the base of the fin. The fin base crease assists in preventing separation at the base of the fin below the principal horizontal seal formed by the sealing bar. The sealing bar may extend from the generally flat face portion of the second jaw a distance beyond the degree to which the ridges extend from their respective face portions. The ridges thus may exert less pressure on the fin than does the sealing bar.
Abstract:
A process for forming an easy-opening arrangement for gable-top cartons is described. A tape is applied to the inside of the pouring spout in order to stiffen the panels, while reducing the force required to separate the thermoplastic seal. The tape is bonded to the thermoplastic surface layer of the carton by an adhesive. During the hot air heating of the carton top prior to sealing, the area where the tape is located is not exposed to the hot air. During closing of the sealing jaws, surfaces on the opposed faces of the sealing jaw urge the adhesive into the space above the edge of the pouring spout to form an impermeable seal. The location of the tape on the carton blank and the apparatus for heating and sealing the carton are also described.

Apparatus for forming a denesting lip in paperboard containers by folding, heating, and sealing or tacking a side extension flap to form a denesting lip for nested stacks of such containers. The denesting apparatus includes a pair of pressure pads which guide the paperboard container onto the apparatus and prevent the container from sliding off the apparatus while the denesting operation is performed. The apparatus also includes a multiplanar mandrel pad for forming a bottom closure that is flat on its exterior surface.

A gable top carton employs a stake joint having spaced apart legs disposed longitudinally on opposite sides of a channel, the channel being formed when a carton blank is folded to form the gable top carton. The spaced apart legs urge the material at the sides of the channel toward the center of the channel to effect a channel seal. The stake seal may be in the form of an inverted U-shaped stake seal. A method and apparatus for forming the stake seal are also contemplated.

A gable-top carton has a pair of panels (4, 6) which form sloping walls and have marginal portions (4m, 6m). Another pair of panels (3m, 5m), are tucked beneath the sloping walls and have marginal portions (3m, 5m). The marginal portions (3m-6m) are heat sealed together to form a ridge-shaped seal. One panel (5) is the pouring spout panel and this is revealed when wings (9, 10), on the sealed carton are folded back. The pouring spout panel (5) is secured by a bond (34) made in a central folded corner (26), a bond (35, 36) between outer corners of the wings (9, 10), and a bond between confronting surfaces of the marginal portions 4m, 6 m). Areas on the marginal portions (4m, 6 m) are not directly heated to facilitate opening of the pouring spout whilst providing an hermetic seal.
Abstract:
A box sealing apparatus on which a box with the bottom flaps folded is positioned on an anvil-type holder supported on a moveable arm. The folded box is then manually pushed into contact with a sealing mechanism. The sealing mechanism has a contacting face that is angularly displaced from the horizontal so that the anvil-type holder has an identical angular position when the anvil holder contacts the contacting face. After the box flaps are sealed, the holder with the sealed box thereupon is returned to the operator by gravitational force for removal of the sealed box.

An ultrasonic joining method for connecting paper material (5), in particular paper, board or paperboard, comprising the following steps: introducing the paper material (5) into a gap (4) between a sonotrode (2) and an anvil (3), causing the sonotrode (2) to oscillate ultrasonically for the ultrasonic welding of the paper material (5), the paper material (5) being moistened with demineralized water (9), preferably on inner sides of joining points, before and/or during the ultrasonic welding.
