A printing unit of a rotary printing press includes a forme cylinder. An inking unit interacts with the forme cylinder and has a plurality of inking rolls. A dampening unit also interacts with the forme cylinder and has a plurality of dampening rolls. A washing device interacts with at least one of the inking rolls and dampening rolls for washing the inking unit and/or the dampening unit. The inking unit includes a plurality of ink applicator rolls which can be placed directly onto the forme cylinder during printing operation. The dampening unit has at least one dampening rotation applicator roll that can also be placed directly onto the forme cylinder during printing operations. In a washing position, one of the plurality of ink application rolls and the dampening rotation applicator roll are brought directly into contact with each other.

A dampener form roll has a wash-up position in which the dampener form roll is in fluid-transferring relationship with the ink form roll so that when wash-up fluid is applied to the ink form roll, it is transmitted to the dampener form roll, and thus effects a clean-up of the ink on the dampener form roll. A throw-off mechanism is provided for moving the dampener form roll between thrown-on and thrown-off positions, and that throw-off mechanism includes a motor having a reciprocating output member connected with a linkage for transmitting the motion of the output member to the dampener form roll. Means is located in the linkage for disabling the linkage so that it is disconnected, thus disconnecting the dampener form roll from the motor. A spring is provided for moving the dampener form roll to its wash-up position upon disconnection of the linkage. Further, the dampener form roll is gear driven through a gear train from the plate cylinder of the printing press and on movement to the wash-up position, one gear for driving the dampener form roll moves out of engagement with its cooperating gear so that the teeth thereof are out of meshing engagement.

A system and method are provided for optimizing a multi-color variable digital data lithographic image forming system by controlling characteristics of one or more individual color inks to maximize ink transfer of a particular color ink layer onto the surface of an image receiving medium substrate, or onto other color ink layers deposited on the surface of the image receiving medium substrate when producing digital output images, including multi-color digital output images, with a proposed variable digital offset lithographic architecture. Ink characteristics and ink transfer parameters are particularly optimized in the proposed variable digital data lithographic systems to promote high efficiency ink transfer from an ink donor surface to an ink receiver surface in order that excessive amounts of untransferred ink do not remain on the ink donor surface requiring extensive cleaning of the reimageable surface in the image forming system between cycles of a multi-color ink system.

The rider roller is always maintained in contact with the dampener form roller during normal press operation, in both printing and nonprinting positions. A cleaning subsystem for a variable data lithography system includes a cleaning roller train having a cleaning member in physical contact with an imaging member such that residual ink remaining on the imaging member, such as following transfer of an inked latent image from the imaging member to a substrate, adheres to the cleaning member through cohesion and is thereby removed from the imaging member. The cleaning roller train uses the ink-splitting mechanics to remove, transport and collect the ink waste. The key cleaning roller train is a thin but uniform layer of ink on the cleaning member that contacts the imaging member causing removal on the residual ink through cohesion.
