There is disclosed a selection mechanism for a single element printer comprising an operating link connected with the print element for the driving rotation thereof and having a first and a second input portion, and a modifying member having the link mounted thereon for pivotal motion about the first input portion. A cam follower is provided on the modifying member for engagement by a case shift cam, which is operable independent of the print shaft, to shift between a pair of locations in either of which a first character selection means cooperates with the modifying member to position the latter in either of two distinctive positions so that the first input portion of the operating link is positionable to any of four positions. The second input portion of the link is associated with a second character selection means for positioning the link to any of a plurality of pivotal positions relative to the first input portion thereof. The selection mechanism is simply constructed by connecting all the input means to a single operating link mounted inclusively on the carrier and, therefore, the selection mechanism can be manufactured at a low cost. Maintenance and adjustment of the printer can also be greatly minimized.

A carrier for a printer, having a single type element, is disclosed. The selection apparatus contained within the carrier is one whereby only a rotary power force plus control signals need be introduced into the carrier. The selection apparatus is comprised of barrel cams having a plurality of channels formed into the periphery of the barrel cams to cause lateral displacement thereof on their drive shaft. The lateral displacement of the barrel cams is converted into a linear motion which is in turn transmitted and converted into rotary motion to position the type element about its rotate and tilt axes. The controls for transmitting signals to the carrier are pneumatic and the pneumatic impulses received by the carrier logic block and actuator blocks activate mechanical latches to insert selector pins into the grooves of the barrel cams. A dual rack and single pinion arrangement is disclosed to convert the linear motion to rotary motion of the type element.

Keyboard generated signals are digitally encoded and converted to varying voltages for application to a coil for generating magnetic forces. The magnetic forces act on a spring mass system including a type disc to rotate the type disc to a selected angular position. The rest position of the disc at any selected angular position is established when the applied magnetic force and the force of an oppositely acting spring reach equilibrium condition. The spring stores or releases energy according to whether the applied magnetic force is greater or less than the existing spring force. The parameters of the system are so chosen that movement from one angular position of rest to another is smoothly accomplished in a given time.

A selector system for a printing head for use in printing machines and the like for selecting a character to be printed from the printing head. The system comprises at least two actuatable code bars. The printing head is positioned with respect to a first coordinate by the use of a selector lever having a set of pivot elements thereon each defining a pivot axis about which the selection lever pivots a preselected amount. In response to the actuation of the code bars, the pivot element about which the selector lever pivots is selected by two stop members each pivotable in response to the actuation of one of the code bars and each engageable with one of two pivot elements, a third stop member engaged with a third pivot element and not pivoting in response to the actuation of any of the code bars and a fourth stop member engaged with a fourth pivot element and pivotable in response to the actuation of either of the two code bars.

A selection mechanism is disclosed which employs a controlled steerable follower for selecting and following a cam groove in a barrel cam to cause relative translation between the barrel cam and the cam follower. The motion of the barrel cam while translating is converted into rotary motion to rotate a single element on a single element printer to accurately position a selected row of characters adjacent the print point. A similar follower is used to cause translational movement of the tilt cam and a bell crank and link arrangement is used to translate the lateral movement of the tilt cam to the type element. The control of the rotate cam follower is electro-mechanical wherein a signal is converted by a linear motor into a mechanical movement at a desired time within a cycle and thus dictates the selection to be made, when combined with an electrical signal to a solenoid for selecting the direction of rotation to which the cam translatory movement is to be converted. Means are disclosed which allows absorbing within the mechanism, of inertia shocks, such that the parts of the device may be made smaller and still withstand the forces required for selection.

The control of the rack shift mechanism is a cam arrangement operated in timed relationship with the translating barrel cam to provide for the shifting of the rack at the beginning of each print cycle, if necessary, and the retaining of the rack in its shifted position at the completion of the cycle, thereby eliminating the necessity to provide for the time required to shift the rack back to its home position at the end of the cycle. The elimination of the restore operation of the rack provides more time during the cycle to operate the selection mechanism and accomplish printing or conversely provides for a smaller amount of time being required for the necessary functions thereby providing the capability of operating the remainder of the mechanism at a faster rate.

A serial printing device for an electronic calculating machine comprises a cylindrical type head movable with respect to the paper support and adapted to print numerical amounts and signs indicating the nature of the amounts in predetermined character positions of a row. The type head carries a plurality of digits and symbols disposed in two separate zones which are prearrangeable for printing by a shift mechanism connected to the type head by means of a differential. A character selector, connected to the type head through the differential is operable commonly for said digits and for said symbols, to select for printing a particular character in the zone of said two zones prearranged by said shift mechanism. The selector including a control unit, a plurality of electromagnetically actuated setting members and a rotating drum cooperating with said members as to be variably shifted. Programming means, responsive to the positions of the head with respect to the paper support control said shift mechanism for causing the type head to prearrange for printing, in each of said predetermined character positions of the row, the corresponding zone of numeric or symbolic characters.
