A surface treatment composition includes a solution having a pH within a range of above 4 to 8 that includes metal cations produced in situ from a metal-containing substance having a Ksp no greater than 1×10−6 in a reaction with an acid having a pKa in a range of −3.0 to +3.5. The composition further includes an agent mixed with the solution that is either a surface sizing agent or a coating agent used on a paper substrate. A print media includes the composition applied to a paper substrate. Preparation of the composition includes reacting the metal-containing substance with the acid, adjusting the pH to above 4 to 8, and mixing the metal cation-containing solution with either the surface sizing or coating agents.

Provided is a color-developing composition containing a molecular compound which has as a component compound a compound represented by formula (I) [wherein Y represents a C1-C12 hydrocarbon group which is chained or branched and saturated or unsaturated, or a C1-C8 hydrocarbon group which is chained or branched, saturated or unsaturated and has an ether or thioether bond; R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represent a C1-C6 alkyl group or C2-C6 alkenyl group; n, p, q and r each represents any integer of 0 to 4; and m represents any integer of 0 to 2]. Also provided is a recording material with a sufficient color-forming sensitivity, superior storage stability, and especially with an extremely little background fogging in a heat resistance test.

An object of the present invention is to provide a novel phenolic compound, and a recording material containing the same, which is excellent in storage stability. A carbonless copy assembly made up of at least one CB sheet and one CF sheet, the CF sheet having a color developer resin coating of less than 0.39 pounds per ream. A process for making the carbonless copy paper assembly comprising the steps of: spraying a composition containing resin capable of developing microencapsulated dyes onto a base sheet to form a CF sheet, and combining that CF sheet with a CB sheet to form the carbonless copy paper assembly.

A process for preparing a polyvalent metal salt of a salicylic acid resin which comprises the steps of reacting salicylic acid or its derivative with styrene or its derivative at a temperature of -20.degree. C. or higher but lower than 40.degree. C. in the presence of sulfuric acid, and then reacting the resulting reaction product with a polyvalent metal compound; an aqueous dispersion in which the polyvalent metal salt of the resin is dispersed in water; and a developing sheet in which the polyvalent metal salt of the salicylic acid resin is used.
