Abstract: The invention concerns improved tire structures, in particular for use with automobiles and the like. The tire is equipped with non-skid or antislipping means, which are regulatable in their position relative to the tire surface and if desired, may be locked and maintained in their operative location until they are released therefrom. A manipulation of predetermined non-skid element or elements may be had, so that the latter are gradually brought into different effective location or locations relative to the tire surface and afford the desirable anti-slipping result commensurate with the prevailing conditions of the road, autobahns and the like, as well as in accordance with the feel and own volition of the driver. Bowden or other mechanical, electrical or pneumatic power transmission means are employable to regulate, adjust, lock or release the skid elements by the driver from within the vehicle and during vehicular traffic.

Abstract: A stud for a tire to improve traction on a roadway which includes a hardened pin mounted in a steel jacket and extending therefrom to engage the roadway, wherein the stud is sized for insertion into openings in the tire tread. The pin is retractable into the jacket thereby removing the pin from contact with the road surface and providing non-studded as well as studded service from the same tire. A spring in the stud jacket is used to propel the pin out of the jacket into the extended position when the pin is released from the securing mechanism. The securing mechanism consists of a series of projections on the pin in interaction with a series of grooves in the interior of the stud jacket. The pin is released from the retracted position by manually pressing the pin further into the jacket until the securing mechanism releases it. The spring also acts to ensure that the pin protrudes the proper distance, when in contact with the roadway, from the surface of the tire by providing less force than necessary to keep the pin extended when the pin is extended more than the proper distance and more force than necessary when the pin is extended less than the proper distance. This self adjusting feature of the spring may be necessary to keep the optimum pin extension due to the differences in the wear rate of the pin and the tire tread due to the pin being retracted for prolonged periods of time. The pin is retracted into the jacket manually by pressing the pin back into the jacket until the securing mechanism locks into place.

Abstract: Cylinders each having open end and an internal engagement section in the mid-portion thereof are fixed in holes bored on an outer circumferential face of a tire tread. In each cylinder, a stud passing through a through-hole of the engagement section and having an expanded section at the front end thereof is inserted with play. The stud is biased toward the front end of the cylinder by a spring provided between a lid closing the rear opening of the cylinder and the expanded section. When the tire slips on a snow- or ice-covered road, the stud inclines and a large-neck section of the front end of the stud engages the rim of the cylinder to maintain the stud in a projected state. The projected large-neck section bites the surface of the road to prevent slippage. On a dry road, the stud 32 is pushed into the cylinder by the weight of the vehicle against the elasticity of the spring.

Abstract: A skid prevention device for tires, which tires are provided with longitudinally- and radially-extending rows of treads separated by discrete, laterally-extending rows of recesses, includes a plurality of elongated, generally U-shaped metal claws disposed within the rows of the recesses of the tire, the outer ends of which have spikes secured thereto, and the inner ends of which are pivotably supportable in the recesses of the tire. Abstract: A steel-cleated, all terrain tire has cleats that dynamically engage with changing road conditions, across slick ice and bridges, and while turning, breaking and accelerating on steep terrain.
