Disclosed are printer vacuum tables, and corresponding systems and methods for their use, in which the printer vacuum tables include multiple zones to apply vacuum, to hold a variety of media types and thicknesses within a given flatness range, to allow high definition printing. The vacuum zones run in the print direction, and each can be controlled for vacuum on and off. In an illustrative embodiment, the vacuum zones include one or more vacuum zones that are fixed with respect to a printer vacuum table surface, and one or more variable vacuum zones that are movable with respect to the printer vacuum table surface. One or more of the vacuum zones can be turned off if the print media does not cover the zone, such as to prevent leakage, and to provide more consistent vacuum hold down, regardless of media size or width.

A media transport system provides full vacuum under media as the media traverses an entire print path of an ink jet printer while simultaneously providing for a no-vacuum inter-copy gap that moves along with the media past print heads of the ink jet printer. This is accomplished with a dual vacuum inner/outer vacuum drum system that includes a first drum that has a matrix of holes that allows for full coverage of vacuum with a second underlying drum that is shifted to align a second set of holes to match the sheet pitch. By shifting the second drum in relation to the first drum, a combination set of holes is aligned to provide full vacuum across the media while a column of holes is blocked to provide a non-vacuum inter-copy gap.

A sheet conveying device includes a conveyance belt, a conveyance plate, an air intake portion, and a charging portion. The conveyance belt has a plurality of belt openings formed in a previously-set suction attraction region in end portions thereof in a width direction perpendicular to a conveyance direction of a sheet, and conveys the sheet. The conveyance plate has a plurality of platen openings formed therein at positions corresponding to the belt openings in the width direction, and is disposed on a back surface side of the conveyance belt. The air intake portion suctions air through the belt openings and the platen openings from the back surface side of the conveyance plate. The charging portion charges a previously-set electrostatic attraction region in a center portion in the width direction of the conveyance belt.

A sheet transfer mechanism for a printer (100) to form an image on a sheet (10) being transferred in a transfer route by propelling ink at ink heads (110a), includes: a transfer belt (160) that has a plurality of adhesion through-holes (165) for holding a sheet (10) and transfers the sheet (10) being held thereon, a platen (620) that slidably supports the transfer belt (160) in an area facing the ink heads (110a) and has a plurality of suction through-holes (622) in an area through which the plurality of the adhesion through-holes (165) pass; a suction fan (650) that generates airflow with negative pressure for holding the sheet (10) on the transfer belt (160) through the plurality of the suction through-holes (622) and the plurality of the adhesion through-holes (165); and plugging plates (624) that adjust a number density of the suction through-holes (622) in the platen (620) depending on an arrangement of the ink heads (110a).

To take blanks of sheets for producing laminated glass, from a cutting table, an adjustable takeoff roller onto which the sheet blanks are wound is used. To fix the beginning of the sheet blank to be taken off to the takeoff roller, openings for applying negative pressure are provided in the lateral surface of the takeoff roller. When a sheet blank is taken from the cutting table, the takeoff roller is brought into position at the beginning of the sheet blank to be taken off, the blank is fixed to the takeoff roller and the takeoff roller is then moved along the cutting table while rotating about its own axis, and so the sheet blank is wound up around the lateral surface of the takeoff roller. For laying down the sheet blank onto a glass pane during the production of laminated glass, a correspondingly reversed procedure may be used.

A device for decurling flat printing materials for a machine for processing the printing materials has a guide surface section whereover the printing materials are drawable. The guide surface section are formed with a decurling notch, and with suction openings arranged along and in the decurling notch and penetrating the guide surface section, and an evacuation system fluidically connected to the suction openings. The suction openings are formed in successive groups thereof, and the evacuation system including a plurality of chambers, of which respective chambers are assigned to a respective one of the groups of suction openings, the chambers being selectively settable with at least one of equal and unequal negative pressures therein during operation, and a machine for processing the printing materials having the decurling device therein.

A vacuum belt conveyor sequentially delivers sheet articles to a digital printer. The sheets are held in position by vacuum on the underside of the sheets through apertures in the belts and covered by the sheets. A plurality of independent plenums on the underside of the belt have chambers respectively communicating with rows of apertures extending along the belt. Vacuum is selectively applied from a manifold only to the plenum chambers that supply apertures that are covered by the sheets so that the ink from the printer will not be directed from its intended position on the sheet by vacuum from adjacent uncovered belt apertures. The sheets are fed to the conveyor in synchronism with the conveyor speed by a timed feeder so that the sheets are carried by the conveyor with a predetermined gap between the sheets and no belt apertures in the gap. A sensor counts the apertures in the belt and activates the feeder at predetermined time intervals.

In wide format web printing the loading of a new web medium is a cumbersome process, requiring the operator to raise a very wide flexible web from the supply roll up to the print surface. The present invention provides a simple apparatus to aid in the manual loading process. The web transport assembly of the apparatus comprises a supply unit arranged for supplying the web from a media roll to a transport path and a pick-up device comprising a pick-up surface and a holding mechanism configured for releasably holding a leading edge section of the web onto the pick-up surface, wherein the pick-up device is moveable between a first position near the supply unit for attaching the leading edge section and a second position near the print surface. The leading edge section is moved upwards towards the print surface while held by the holding mechanism.

A system and method are provided for implementing more consistent vacuum belt transport movement for the transport of image receiving media in image forming devices, and for the transport of packages and components for processing and storage in myriad transport belt systems employing vacuum plenums to support and secure the materials being transported on the vacuum belts. A high-velocity stream of forced air is provided in a plenum positioned between the vacuum belt and the underlying structural components to create an area of low pressure to hold the media to the opposite side of the vacuum belt. The high-velocity air layer not only creates a pressure differential to support the vacuum pressure, but also provides an air bearing below the vacuum belt between the vacuum belt and the underlying structural components to allow the vacuum belt to move easily over the underlying structural components.
