摘要:
A method for the manufacture of a preform of barium containing heavy metal fluoride glass comprising a core and a jacket for drawing infrared light waveguides for optical communications technology by casting molten glass onto a predetermined body of solid glass. Hitherto, such a method was executed such that molten core glass was cast into a tube of jacket glass. In order to achieve thicker preforms, one proceeds such here that a solid row of the core glass is surrounded with molten jacket glass. The boundary surface between core and jacket of the generated preform can be improved in the method disclosed herein that the surface of the solid rod is etched before being surrounded with the jacket glass. A nearly perfect boundary surface is obtained by etching with a ZrOCl.sub.2 solution.

A new method for fabricating devices which include multicomponent metal halide glasses, e.g., multicomponent metal halide glass optical fibers, is disclosed. In accordance with the inventive method, a multicomponent metal halide glass body, essentially free of crystallites, is produced by cooling essentially every portion of a melt incorporated into the glass body at a quench rate which is necessarily greater than or equal to about 10 Kelvins per second (K/sec). This necessary quench rate is achieved by successively quenching relatively small portions of the melt, e.g., thin layers or droplets of melt material, having relatively small cross-sectional dimensions.

The invention gives a coating with a very high vitrification rate. The resulting surface has physicochemical characteristics which are similar to those of fluoride glass. In order to achieve this result, the material constituting the fluoride glass enamel quickly crosses the temperature range between the melting point and the glossy transition temperature. Moreover, the metallic substrate temperature must be high enough to enable an active physiochemical process at the glass-metal interface which results in a correct "hooking". A "hooking" temperature is higher than one where a physical adhesion occurs, which results from Van der Waals interactions without any formation of chemical bonds at the glass-metal interface. The particular chemical reactivity of molten fluorides, which otherwise results in critical problems of corrosion, is in this case a favorable factor which generally reduces the hooking temperature to a level which is far below the glass melting temperature.

A glass fiber having a central core formed of material having a relatively high index of refraction and an outer casing formed of material having a relatively low index of refraction is formed with perfect contact between the core and casing by forming a coating of casing material on the core and permitting the coating to harden. The coating may be applied by immersing the core material in a bath of casing material, by drawing the core material vertically through a bath of the casing material, or by drawing the core material in a horizontal direction under a vertical column of casing material while twisting said core material.
