Abstract:
Bulk paint and ceramic powder systems, methods of forming same, and methods of forming a flexible ceramic coating on a metal substrate are disclosed. The systems may include a ceramic composition having between 2 to 30 weight percent of an alkali metal oxide, such as K2O, Na2O, and Li2O or mixtures thereof, between 10 to 74 weight percent SiO2, and between 23 to 79 weight percent B2O3. Additives that are nonwetting with molten metals, such as boron nitride, provide durable coatings for metal processing operations. The ceramic composition may include less than 5 weight percent additional metal oxides. The bulk paint system further may include water and a cellulosic suspension agent to form a bulk paint. The ceramic powder system may be processed to form a uniform powder. The bulk paint or uniform powder may be applied to a metal substrate, such as a ferrous metal substrate, dried, and heated to form a flexible coating on the metal substrate.

Abstract:
Induction heating facilitated coating systems and processes for pipes overcome corrosion and erosion of the pipes at extreme temperatures and pressures in applications including oil and gas downhole tubulars and pipelines as well as processing facilities. Being based on vitreous fused inorganic compounds, the present invention achieves very high corrosion resistance at remarkably modest cost. Attractive economics and immunity to chlorides and moisture permeation at extreme concentrations and temperatures also make it well suited to desalination plants and potable water piping applications. Due to its extreme temperature resistance, it also is very well suited for geothermal wells. Additionally, due to its characteristic smooth durable surface, the present invention is ideally suited for applications involving the opposite of corrosion, namely scaling problems, such as fouling in sewage systems and scale buildup in heavy oil wells.

The enamel composition may include 15 to 50 wt % of phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5); 1 to 20 wt % of silicon dioxide (SiO2); 1 to 20 wt % of boron oxide (B2O3); 5 to 20 wt % of one or more of lithium superoxide (Li2O), sodium oxide (Na2O), or potassium oxide (K2O); 1 to 5 wt % of one or more of sodium fluoride (NaF), calcium fluoride (CaF2), or aluminum fluoride (AlF3); 1 to 35 wt % of one or more of magnesium oxide (MgO), barium oxide (BaO), or calcium oxide (CaO); and 5 to 30 wt % of one or more of titanium dioxide (TiO2), vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), molybdenum trioxide (MoO3), or iron oxide (Fe2O3). With such an enamel composition, cleaning may be performed at a low temperature for thermal decomposition, and contaminants, such as fat, may be more completely removed.

Abstract:
A double glass coated steel tank for a high temperature water heater and its method of fabrication is described. The tank is constructed of steel welded parts and fittings are secured to the tank without the presence of sharp edges being formed on the inner surface of the tank not to form any weakness in the composite glass coating to be applied. A first water resistant base coat of cobalt glass enriched with ZIRCON (trademark) is applied to the inner surface and the tank is heat fired at a high temperature in the order of about 1600 degrees F. A second high temperature water resistant glass coat, having a fine gas bubble size not exceeding 10 microns, is applied over the first coat and the tank is heat fired a second time. The composite glass coating thus formed is highly water and corrosion resistant in a water environment of up to at least 190 degrees F.

A roll member of metal body is coated with a smooth glass layer sprayed thereon. The invention is also directed to a method for manufacturing a roll member of metal body having a glass surface, including preheating the surface of the metal body which is subject to a blast treatment to 200.degree..about.600.degree. C. with or without a stainless undercoat layer on the blast-treatment surface, spraying a glass material onto the surface of the metal body, and grinding the sprayed glass surface to form a smooth surface.

C. after the frit has been stoved on unalloyed steel which is capable of being enamelled, the frit containing 1 to 6% by weight, based on the total quantity of the frit, of bonding oxides and the other constituents so chosen that the following equation is fulfilled: ##EQU1## in which the deviation from the ratio 1:1:1 is at most .+-.8% for each of the monovalent atoms, divalent atoms and pentavalent atoms. The enamel frits according to the invention being useful for electrostatic powder application.
Abstract:
In the electrostatic spraying on metal substrates of mixtures of different inorganic powders which differ in density, particle size and electrical resistance, the improvement which comprises first forming uniform agglomerates as the different powders, and then spraying the uniform agglomerates. This prevents color variation due to separation of different powders.
Abstract:
The present apparatus facilitates feeding a particulate vitreous material, such as glass or enamel, into a horizontally rotating tubular article, such as a tank or vessel, heated to the fusion point of the vitreous material, usually temperatures of 1500.degree. F. or above, to coat the article with a fused coating. The present boom is comprised of a rigid elongated outer tube having a downstream end and an upstream end, the downstream end is adapted to be directed into the interior of the article that is to be coated. The elongated outer tube encloses an elongated, rigid feed tube, suitably concentrically positioned therein. The feed tube has a means of receiving and transporting a supply of finely divided vitreous material, e.g., glass frit, therethrough. A distributing means such as a nozzle or spray head, is positioned in the downstream end of the outer tube and internally connected to the feed tube. The apparatus has internal cooling ducts, formed by an elongated, rigid tube positioned intermediate to the feed tube and the outer tube, preferably aligned concentrically with each. The ducts facilitate circulation of a supply of cooling medium, such as air, through the boom. The outer portion of the boom is covered with a layer of low mass insulation. The outside of the insulation may suitably be covered with a reflective surface, such as particulate magnesium oxide.
