The compound is a macrocyclic chromotropic acid derivative which can be substituted at a variety of naphthalene ring and bridge positions. The compound may be administered parenterally, orally, or topically for treating infection by enveloped viruses.

Novel non-radioactive iodine substituted amyloid binding compounds and amyloid binding compounds which are readily iodinated are further aspects or the invention.

Disclosed embodiments concern an array for use in identifying or identifying and quantifying analytes in a sample using a macrocyclic sensor comprising a macrocyclic compound and a detectable moiety. The disclosed array may be used to discriminate among various analytes based on different features, such as post-translational modifications, isomeric post-translational modifications, and the peptide sequence around post-translational modifications. Also disclosed is a method for identifying analytes comprising a post-translational modification, as well as an enzymatic assay using the disclosed macrocyclic sensor.

The present invention provides novel fluorescent compounds and covalent attachment chemistries which facilitate the use of these compounds as labels for ultrasensitive and quantitative flourescent detection of low levels of biomolecules. In a preferred embodiment, the flourescent labels of this invention are novel derivatives of the hydroxy-pyrene trisulphonic and disulphonic acids which may be used in any assay in which radioisotopes, colored dyes or other fluorescent molecules are currently used. Thus, for example, any assay using labeled antibodies, proteins, oligonucleotides or lipids, including fluorescent cell sorting, fluorescence microscopy (including dark-field microscopy), fluorescence polarization assays, ligand, receptor binding assays, receptor activation assays and diagnostic assays can benefit from use of the compounds disclosed herein.
