摘要: A method is described for producing an aqueous thickener dispersion from a monomer composition made of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and at least one ethylenically unsaturated hydrophobic monomer, (i) an at least partially polymerized pre-emulsion being produced from 10 to 80 wt.-% of said monomer composition, and (ii) the residual quantity of said monomer composition being added completely to the at least partially polymerized pre-emulsion and initiating a radical polymerization. The monomer composition preferably also comprises an associative monomer. The method avoids disadvantages of batch polymerization, such as inadequate batch-to-batch reproducibility and safety problems.

摘要: The present invention relates to a powdery, cross-linked polymer absorbing water and aqueous liquids formed of polymerized, unsaturated, acid groups-containing monomers that are present as salts neutralized to the extent of at least 50 mol-% and which optionally comprise further monomers which are copolymerizable with the acid groups-containing monomers as well as water-soluble polymers, the polymer being formed of acidic, polymerized monomers partially neutralized to the extent of 5-30 mol-%, relative to the acid groups-containing monomer portion. The polymer has a high retention, high liquid absorption under pressure, high swelling pressure, and a low content of soluble components. The present invention further relates to a process for the production of said polymer and to its use as a component in sanitary articles which absorb body fluids and in wound dressings, in current-conducting and light-transmitting cables, as soil conditioners, as a component in packaging materials and in depot materials for the controlled release of active substances.

摘要: Polymer particles or beads for use as opacifiers in paints are described in which a core is provided with a hard sheath and the particle has one or more voids produced by reaction with a non-volatile permanent or fixed base. The sheath is a coploymer of an ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic monomer free of acid groups and at least 2 percent by weight of a soft ester-containing monomer and optionally styrene in an amount of up to 25 mole percent. The core is formed from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer with acid functionality. The sheath polymer has a glass transition temperature of at least 40.degree. C. The particles have a size of up to 40000 nanometers before swelling the core by some 150 to 2000 percent.

摘要: In situ solvent free methods for making anhydride based graft copolymers which involve mixing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, an anhydride monomer, either a monofunctional polyglycol having a hydroxyl or amine terminal group or a polyfunctional polyglycol having a weight average molecular weight of greater than 5,000 and at least one terminal hydroxyl group, and a free radical initiator to form a mixture. The mixture is heated to form a copolymer having repeat units derived from the ethylenically unsaturated monomer and anhydride monomer, and a copolymer grafted polyglycol comprising a main polyglycol backbone having copolymer side chains which are heated to form an anhydride based graft copolymer. The anhydride based graft copolymers are especially useful as soil release agents in detergent formulations.
