Either an oxygen lance with an auxiliary cover or electrodes with an auxiliary cover are introduced into the melting vessel through the vessel cover. The spherical melting vessel is lined with a lining. It is arranged on running rails as a traveling melting vessel, and it is mounted on an inner running rim and an outer running rim. The melting vessel is fastened to the inner running rim by support elements arranged on the circumference. Both running rims are interlocked by shear wedges. With the melting vessel locked, a cable winch with traction cables makes possible the tilting movements of the melting vessel both in the direction of steel tapping on the running rails and back into the upright position.

In order to permit rotation of the vessel relative to the trunnion ring about the vessel axis at right angles with the noted horizontal axis, two annular rows of support elements such as rollers are mounted on the trunnion ring and engaged with respective annular tires on the vessel so as to bear its radial load. Two other annular rows of rollers or like support elements are also mounted on the trunnion ring and engaged with the respective tires so as to bear the axial vessel load. Several identical drive mechanisms are compactly mounted within the trunnion ring for revolving the vessel through a gear drive, friction drive, or chain drive.

A crucible of a converter is mounted to a pair of supports and releasably coupled to a tilt drive. Secured to each of the supports is a bearing assembly within which a crucible trunnion is journalled. A slidable coupling shaft interconnects an internally toothed output gear of the tilt drive and an internally toothed gear fixed to one of the trunnions. The coupling shaft includes a spur gear adjacent each of its ends. One coupling gear engages the trunnion internal gear while the other engages the tilt drive internal gear. The peripheral surface of each coupling gear comprises a spherical segment to provide an articulated connection for accommodating axial misalignment between the trunnion and the tilt drive internal gears. To disconnect the crucible from the tilt drive, the coupling shaft is displaced axially away from the trunnion until the spherical segment gear disengages the trunnion gear. The coupling shaft includes a spindle coaxially mounted to its tilt drive end. A threaded portion of the spindle is in engagement with a worm driven gear wheel hub whose rotation axially displaces the spindle to move the coupling shaft.

An apparatus for supplying fluids to a converter has a rotary joint coupled to a trunnion shaft, one end of the rotary joint being connected to fluid supply pipes and the other end to fluid conduits communicating with tuyeres at the bottom of the converter. The rotary joint comprises a fixed casing and a rotary assembly, that is sealedly and rotatably fitted in the casing and connected to the trunnion shaft. The rotary assembly has a cylindrical member fitting in the casing. A plurality of axially spaced, circular communication grooves are provided in at least one of the internal surface of the casing and the external surface of the cylindrical member. The cylindrical member is provided with a passageway which opens into the communication grooves at one end and into the atmosphere where the cylindrical member emerges outside the casing at the other. The fluid supply pipes are attached to the casing so as to communicate with the communication grooves and the fluid conduits to the exposed part of the cylindrical member so as to communicate with the passageway.

The reaction vessel is provided with an improved tuyere formed generally of concentric tubes of constant cross section so that the cross section of the tuyere remains constant as the tuyere erodes away with the erosion of the inner lining during successive heats of refined metal.

This arrangement comprises a refining reactor, a decantation vessel, means for feeding at a first level liquid metal containing slag forming impurities into the reactor and discharging means located at the second level which is higher than the first level for discharging material from the reactor into the decantation vessel. The arrangement also includes means for blowing a refining gas into the reactor so as to form a metal-slag foam which passes through the discharging means into the decantation vessel.
