Disclosed are processes for the selective extraction of tin from aqueous acidic solutions bearing tin and other metal cations. Branched tertiary phosphine oxides comprising at least two branches per alkyl group show higher extraction coefficients, E, for tin than other metals, e.g. zinc (III), iron (II), iron (III), copper (II) and lead (II). Novel compositions for selectively extracting tin comprising combinations of symmetrical branched phosphine oxides and unsymmetrical phosphine oxides are also disclosed.

The invention provides a process for recovering hydrogen cyanide from an aqueous solution by extracting the hydrogen cyanide into an organic solvent phase. The organic solvent may comprise a neutral organophosphorous compounds, such as compounds selected from the group consisting of alkyl or aryl substituted phosphates, phosphonates and phosphine oxides. In alternative embodiments the organophosphorous compound is tri-butyl phosphate, di-butyl-butyl-phosphonate or tri-alkyl phosphine oxides. The organic solvent may be diluted in an organic diluent, such as an aliphatic or kerosene-type diluent. Alternative dilutions may be used, such as 75%, 50% or 25%. In some embodiments, the pH of the aqueous solution containing dissolved cyanide may be adjusted to between 2 and 8, or between 3 and 7, or between 4 and 6. The organic solvent may be contacted following extraction with a basic aqueous solution to strip cyanide from the organic solvent into a basic aqueous cyanide strip solution. The stripped organic solvent may then be returned to the loading process, to extract HCN from fresh aqueous solution.

A visual image display device with improved resolution contains a pair of conductive electrodes in spaced relationship. Adjacent one electrode is a first barrier layer which is typically a resin such as polyamide containing a readily oxidizable and reducible material such as zinc nitrate. Adjacent the other electrode is a thin film of solvent, for example, 1,2-dichloroethane. Positioned between the film of solvent and the first barrier layer is a second barrier layer which is a normally light transmitting recording medium. The second barrier layer is both photoionizable and capable of electrochemically producing a colored species. Typically the second barrier layer is a solid containing a resin such as polyvinyl butyral, an active material such as 1-p-anisyl-3 diethylamino styryl-5-diethylaminophenyl-2-pyrazoline and, in selected embodiments, an activator such as carbon tetrachloride.

A method of selectively removing impurities from a scandium-containing feed solution includes contacting an aqueous scandium-containing solution with an organic solvent stream containing an extractant, thereby forming a loaded organic solvent stream containing the impurity or impurities while leaving the scandium in the raffinate. The aqueous stream containing the scandium is washed, diluted and has inorganic salts added before being contacted with a second organic solvent stream to extract the scandium selectively, and followed by stripping the scandium from the scandium-containing loaded organic extractant stream by adding oxalic acid to the loaded organic extractant stream to form scandium oxalate.

A method of reducing radiotoxicity in an aqueous acidic solution is disclosed. The method comprises oxidizing actinide ions in an aqueous acidic solution to hexavalent actinide ions. An organic phase comprising at least one organophosphorus extractant is added to the aqueous acidic solution. The at least one organophosphorus extractant comprises a compound having from one oxygen atom to three oxygen atoms bonded to a phosphorus atom and having one of the oxygen atoms bonded to the phosphorus atom through a phosphorus-oxygen double bond. Complexes are formed between the hexavalent actinide ions and the at least one organophosphorus extractant. The complexes are separated from the aqueous acidic solution. An additional method and a reaction system for removing actinides from an aqueous acidic solution are also disclosed.

A method is provided for the hydrometallurgical recovery of metal values from sources containing more than one metal of antimony, lead, copper, zinc, bismuth, tin, cadmium and other metals by leaching the metal containing source with a ferric fluoborate/fluroboric acid solution to provide a leachant metal containing solution. The leachant solution is contacted with specific organic extractants such as an organophosphoric acid ester, an alkyl salicylaldoxime and an amidobis(thiophosphoryl) compound in a series of extraction steps to separate metals based on the extractant used. The organic extractant solution is stripped of the extracted metal(s) and the metal(s) recovered. The remaining leach solution after extraction being either further treated to extract other metals or processed to provide metal values contained therein.
