A process and apparatus for producing open-end spun yarn using an electrostatic field produced by a pair of spaced electrodes in combination with a spinning rotor having an acutely inclined circumferential wall and a circumferential groove at the junction between the inner surface of the rotor wall and the planar surface of the rotor. Staple fibers are fed to the electrostatic field where they are generally linearly oriented and straightened and from which the fibers are aerodynamically withdrawn and fed onto the inner surface of the inclined rotor wall by means of a feed passageway tangentially oriented to the inclined rotor wall and having a gradually decreasing cross-sectional area so as to impose upon the fibers fed therethrough an ever-increasing velocity. The fibers centrifugally progress along the inner surface of the inclined rotor wall and gather in the circumferential rotor groove at which point the fibers begin to combine through cohesion both with other fibers in the groove and with the fibers in the tail of the yarn which is being twisted and withdrawn from the rotor, thereby forming a strand of fibers cohering to the tail of yarn previously formed. The formed yarn is continuously withdrawn, the continuous rotation of the rotor causing the tail of the yarn being withdrawn to be continuously swept along the inner circumference of the rotor thereby imparting twist to the strand of fibers at the tail, and also effecting the addition through cohesion of new fibers to the tail from the circumferential groove.

An improved spinning head apparatus used in the performance of open end electrostatic spinning of fibers into yarn wherein internal rotating parts are maintained free of stray fiber buildup comprising a stationary housing having a throughbore therein and a hollow spindle for rotation within the throughbore. The spindle includes a fiber collecting funnel at one end. An electrode is mounted within the housing in a suitable position to electrostatically attract charged fibers to the collecting funnel. Means defining an opening in the housing connects the throughbore of the housing with the outside environment whereby the throughbore can be maintained free of stray fiber buildup.

A method and apparatus for making filaments and a fibrous product of randomly overlying filaments in a mat configuration bonded to each other at areas of intersection. The filaments are formed by subjecting a travelling layer of a settable, dielectric, molten polymer material to an electrostatic field of lines of flux of sufficient density and intensity to flow from the layer of molten polymer a multiplicity of filaments which are partially set as they form. The filaments are subjected to the field along enough to separate them from the surface of the layer and are then collected randomly overlying each other in a tacky condition so that they bond to each other in areas of intersection. The method may include insertion of an object in the path of the separated filaments for collecting them on a surface of the object. The object can be rotated so that a package of the matter material is formed about it to protect it. The layer can be pretreated before subjection to the field to densify discrete areas to form on the surface thereof starting points for the filaments. The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a travelling transport for the layer in the form of a belt permeable to the electrostatic field in which case two electrodes develop the field or the transport may be conductive to act as one of the electrodes developing the field. A collector for the matter material can be constituted as a travelling electrode in the form of a conductive belt which is grounded with a potential applied across the belt transports.

The machine for spinning textile fibres has a rotor in the form of a multi-vane wheel including a disc having a central opening and a fibre-supporting surface adapted to receive a stream of fibres thereupon and which takes part in formation of a yarn from these fibres at rotation of the rotor, the yarn being withdrawn through the central opening. A plurality of slots is made through this disc surface, extending from the central opening toward the periphery of the disc, projections being located on this fibresupporting surface intermediate of these slots, in order to assist in retaining the fibres at this surface of the disc. The machine provides for reliable retention of the fibres at the supporting surface of the disc irrespective of the angular speed of rotation of the rotor; furthermore, it effects the removal of foreign matter directly during the course of spinning without affecting this process. The proposed machine may be employed with the utmost effectiveness for spinning yarn having a high linear density.
