An apparatus and method to install contraction joints in concrete slabs. The method uses a device, which inserts a strip of plastic or paper tape into freshly laced concrete, as the device is driven across a concrete slab. The tape is folded immediately prior to being inserted into freshly placed concrete, and functions to weaken the slab at the contraction joint location for the purpose of causing a crack to form in the slab. Plastic tape can be used, which functions as a moisture vapor retarder, and thereby, protects floor coverings from moisture damage, such as mold and mildew, at contraction joint locations.

To protect the filler strip, a protective cap element is provided. The protective cap element has a top surface and opposing side surfaces. The structure of the protective cap element creates a long central groove. Pin corrals extend from the side surfaces of the protective cap element. The protective cap element is placed over the filler strip so that the filler strip is disposed within the groove. The protective cap element and the filler strip are anchored by driving anchor pins through at least some of the pin corrals. Concrete is then poured against the filler strip and the protective cap element, wherein the concrete envelops the pin corrals that are not engaging anchor pins.

A system and method are provided for forming expansion joints within artificial ground cover. An elongated expansion joint support is coupled with a length of expansion joint material. A lower end portion of the expansion joint support is shaped to engage a ground surface. The two structures may be coupled with one another in different positions to vary the resulting expansion joint height. The lower end portion of the expansion joint support may be shaped to have a ground engagement wall and to receive ground engagement spikes. No component parts need be removed from the system after the application of artificial ground cover adjacent thereto, thus permitting simultaneous application of ground cover on both sides of the expansion joint.

The preferred embodiment of the invention utilizes an arrow shaped plastic expansion joint with two holes bored inside the expansion joint. To use the preferred embodiment of Replacement Expansion Joint For Cement, an individual would remove deteriorating wooden expansion joints located in grooves between concrete slabs. The length of the wooden expansion joints would be measured to permit the user to purchase and install the proper length of replacement expansion joint. The user would then insert the expansion joint of the present invention with the arrow side facing toward the ground into the groove from the wooden expansion joint. The newly installed expansion joint would be much more resistant to the weather elements than the wooden expansion joints. The triangular end would allow the expansion joints of the present invention easily to bore into the ground and the lips of the expansion joint of the present invention would keep the expansion joint in place.
