The socket has an open rectangular cross-section with a receiving cavity designed to receive and ensleeve the plug, which also has a rectangular cross-section. The bottom, top, and back walls are planar in shape providing three planes on which the socket can mate to a planar portion of a structure, such as a sheet pile. The method includes, inter alia, calculating soil forces by taking into account material strength of sheet pile, soil friction against the sheet pile in combination with the strength of the integral soil anchor, selecting sheet pile size and length based on soil forces calculation; and installation of sheet pile to form a soil retaining system. A subsurface barrier wall having a number of interconnected columns is disclosed. The columns are driven into the subsurface, one next to the other in interlocking fashion, with a percussive drive hammer. A sonic drilling tool is driven ahead of the columns. The columns include interconnecting elements which slidably couple adjacent columns together as a column is being driven into the subsurface. The barrier wall may be used to divert, contain, or remediate the migration of subsurface contaminants.
