A system for regulating the operation of an idling motor vehicle monitors one or more selected engine operational parameters such as coolant temperature, exhaust gas temperature, and catalytic converter temperature, and compares the measured parameters against selected benchmark criteria stored in the memory of a microprocessor. The microprocessor controls the vehicle's ignition system to shut down the engine when the measured parameters come within the corresponding benchmark criteria. The system preferably but not necessarily operates in conjunction with a remote vehicle starter system. The system may also or alternatively be adapted to shut down an idling motor vehicle engine when total idling time reaches a specified maximum value, which may be selected based on idling time restriction bylaws. Accordingly, the system promotes reduced fuel consumption and mitigates environmental impacts by automatically regulating vehicle idling times, while also facilitating avoidance of idling time restriction bylaw violations.

An internal combustion engine has a fuel pressure sensor, the measured value of which represents a fuel pressure in a fuel reservoir of the internal combustion engine. Fuel is metered from the fuel reservoir into a combustion chamber. In a predefined idle operating state (LBZ) of the internal combustion engine, a speed of the internal combustion engine is regulated so as to reach a specific idling speed. During the regulation process, a value of a manipulated variable for metering the fuel is determined, the value being required to reach the specific idling speed. Furthermore, it is concluded that the measured fuel pressure value contains an error (ERR) when the determined required value of the manipulated variable differs from a reference value (REF) predefined for the predefined idle operating state (LBZ) of the internal combustion engine by at least a given amount or factor.

A number of embodiments of engine control for marine application wherein the engine is called upon to operate for long periods at speeds substantially below normal idling speed. This is encountered when trolling. The arrangement includes a system for substantially retarding the spark to assist in shifting and also to maintain stability when running at these low speeds. Adjustments may be made in air flow and fuel supply amounts so as to further augment the smooth running and avoid stalling under these trolling conditions. Various control routines for achieving appropriate ignition timing under the widely varying instantaneous speeds during trolling are also disclosed.
