Abstract: A towing apparatus has a spine with multiple generally parallel spine members extending in a longitudinal direction and having a length of at least 100 m, and with a leading end and a trailing end. A series of blades are mounted to the spine by couplers which allow the blade to rotate about an axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal direction, each blade having a first surface facing generally in the trailing end direction and a second surface facing generally in the leading end direction. Restraints prevent rotation of each blade by more than a pre-set amount towards the leading end, so that impingement of a wave on the first surface applies a force to the apparatus in the leading end direction. A pair of the towing apparatus' may be arranged to connect to a floating collector with a beach shape to collect floating debris on the sea surface, ridges helping to retain the debris on the slope until it is washed up into a channel.

Abstract: A buoyant wave energy capturing device is provided for use in a wave energy conversion (WEC) system, the device comprising: an absorber portion having a physical property linked to a hydrodynamic characteristic of the absorber portion; and wherein the physical property of the absorber portion, and in-turn, the hydrodynamic characteristic of the absorber portion, is arranged to be adjusted. The present invention aims to provide an improved energy capturing member for use in a WEC system which is less susceptible to damage as a result of large wave forces.

Abstract: A wave energy converter has blades (54, 56, 57, 59) on frames (51, 52) rotating about a pivot joint (53) on a structure (4, 52, 502, 505, 86). There is reciprocating rotary motion of the frame with respect to the structure, providing reciprocating rotary input power to a mechanism (73, 94, 98). The mechanism (98) may be arranged so that the reciprocating input power is transferred to uni-directional power via pulleys (101, 106) and sprag clutches (102, 107).

Abstract: Several embodiments of a device for economically harvesting wave energy are disclosed. A sealed vessel for air storage, the spar buoy, is mostly submerged under water is also used as an inertial body that surface floats move relative to. The spar buoy may take many geometrical forms, but all have a stem that is above the water surface. Piston pumps are placed at the top of the stem. The pump has a gearing reduction to optimize the rotational motion of the pump drive shaft. Small angular motion at the drive shaft results in multiple cycles of linear reciprocal motion of the piston. Various mechanisms could convert the relative motion between the floats and the spar buoy to a rotational motion of the shaft. The compressed air generated by the pump is stored in the spar buoy and regenerated as electrical energy by expanding the compressed air in a turbine.

Abstract: An underwater wave energy converter (WEC) (10) has a piston (32) that reciprocates up and down as recurring waves (22) pass over. Downward motion of the piston (32) drives the rods or plungers (50b) of a multiplicity of hydraulic jacks (50) to pressurize hydraulic fluid in an energy conversion system. Ultimately, the energy conversion system powers one or more hydraulic motors (511, 512) that drive an electric generator (510) or multiple generators. A sensor system (25) detects characteristics of in-coming waves such as by detecting changes in pressure as in-coming waves (22) pass over the sensor system (25). The sensors can be mounted on the ocean floor seaward from the WECs (10), and a control computer system (231) calculates characteristics of the in-coming waves such as wave height and speed data, and uses the data to control aspects of the WECs (10) and other components of the energy conversion system.

Abstract: An apparatus for converting wave energy to electrical energy in a sea environment comprises a flotation duck anchored to the sea bottom and a turbine assembly pivotally connected thereto comprising an air chamber partially filled with liquid and/or granular particles having a turbine mounted on the upper portion thereof. The turbine is either self-rectifying or with a flap valve controlled entrance to the air chamber. A generator is coupled to the turbine and driven thereby. In operation, the motion of the waves causes the liquid and/or granular particles to compress the air within the chamber which is then used to drive the turbine. The spent air is fed back into the air chamber from the turbine as wave motion continues. In alternate embodiments the turbine generator assembly is mounted to the upper portion of an air chamber open to the sea on the bottom in an apparatus which rotates about a fixed or stable central axis. Gearing arrangements to drive the generator either alone or in combination with a liquid or air turbine drive are also disclosed. Compression of the air within the chamber or liquid, as the case may be, drives the turbine. Multiple assemblies may be readily coupled together to generate electrical energy in commercially practical quantities.

Abstract: A plurality of base members are seated on an ocean bed adjacent the shore and they support at their shore ends normally expanded compression cylinders provided with fluid inlets and outlets controlled by check valves. The outlets are connected by conduits with the inlet of a turbine that is operatively connected with an electric generator. Rigid pressure plates are disposed above the base members and the cylinders thereon and are inclined downwardly from their shore ends to their opposite ends, where they are hinged to the off-shore ends of the base members. Waves passing over the pressure plates will force their upper ends down to compress the cylinders to force fluid through the conduits to the turbine, after which spring means will expand the cylinders and raise the pressure plates. The base members are located in such positions on the ocean bed that the pressure plates will be depressed in succession to provide substantially constant flow of fluid to the turbine. The turbine can be a water turbine alone, or there can be both a water turbine and an air turbine.
