A method of producing a shell type needle roller bearing having a shell type outer ring whose opposite ends in the axial direction thereof are bent radially inwardly to form flanges; and a plurality of needle rollers arranged along an inner circumferential area of the outer ring. The method comprises the steps of: a) bending one end of the outer ring radially inwardly to form a flange portion on one end of the outer ring for forming the outer ring in the specified shape; b) assembling hardened/tempered needle rollers or un-hardened needle rollers into the outer ring; c) bending other end of the outer ring radially inwardly to form another flange to form a final shape of the needle roller bearing; d) performing a carbonitriding treatment to the assembled needle roller bearing; and then e) performing hardening and tempering treatments to the assembled needle roller bearing.

A method for manufacturing ball bearings and a sintered metal outer race preform for use therein in which the method comprises the steps of forming a generally annular sintered metal outer race preform, the preform preferably having a composition of a 97-99.4% iron and 0.60 to 1.00% carbon; the preform being fabricated from sintered metal powder and having a sinter density of approximately 6.1 to 6.5 grams per cubic centimeter and a sintered hardness of Rb 20 to 40; the preform having arcuate, concentrically disposed inner and outer annular faces, the inner face having a radially inwardly disposed curvilinear portion on one side thereof, and an annular side face on the side of the preform opposite the said curvilinear portion joining the inner and outer arcuate faces; the said side face having a concentric generally wedge-shaped annular flange thicker at its bottom than at its top and having a wall distal to the said annular face, preferably formed as part of a generally V-shaped groove in the said side face, the said wall distal to the said inner annular face being straight from top to bottom and extending at an oblique angle of preferably approximately 45.degree. to the normal to the said side face; positioning an inner face within the annulus defined by the outer race; positioning a plurality of balls intermediate the inner and outer races; and deforming at least a portion of the said flange radially inwardly to generate an entrapment for the said balls between the said inner face of the preform and the inner race; the said deformation preferably being achieved by advancing a generally annular deforming tool having an annular face, straight from its top to its bottom, disposed at an angle of approximately 5.degree. from the plane of said side face of the preform, perpendicularly thereto to engage the top of said flange until it is deformed radially inwardly sufficiently to entrap the balls to the extent desired.

One method is for producing an inner ring for a tapered roller bearing in which the inner ring comprises a raceway portion and a fixed edge portion. The method may include providing an inner ring blank and an unfinished fixed edge portion. The inner ring blank may include an unfinished raceway portion and the unfinished fixed edge portion may have a larger outside diameter than the unfinished raceway portion. The inner ring blank may have a through-opening. The inner ring blank may be formed into the inner ring by extrusion in a main forming step, the unfinished fixed edge portion being transformed into the fixed edge portion and the unfinished raceway portion being transformed into the raceway portion. The inner ring may be formed in its final contour without any cutting.

A method for producing a composite rolling bearing (1) having a bearing flange (3) and at least one rolling bearing (4, 5) held on the bearing flange (3) by an inner ring (6, 7). In order to be able to fix the inner ring (7) on the bearing flange (3) with axial preloading without expansion, the inner ring (7) is acted upon by a holding-down device (23) that radially holds down the inner ring (7) and is preloaded against the inner ring (7) by a regulated axial force (F), and, by way of an advancing cone (21) introduced radially on the inside axially into the bearing flange (3), material (11) present on the bearing flange (3) is displaced radially towards the outside into a recessed formation (15, 16) in the inner ring (7).
