    摘要: A fireplace afterburner is presented including a shell having a first open shell end for receiving fireplace emissions and a second open shell end for expelling fireplace emissions, a flue inside said shell having a first flue end which can be closed, and a second flue end which is open, wherein when the first flue end is closed fireplace emissions flow around said flue, and wherein when said first flue end is open fireplace emission flow through said flue, a heating element connected to said shell and encircling said flue, wherein said heating element heats emissions that pass in proximity to the element, and a catalyst bed connected to said shell and encircling said flue. A method for reducing products of incomplete combustion in fireplace emissions is presented including receiving fireplace emissions into a shell, heating said fireplace emissions to at least 1501° F. (816° C.), reacting said fireplace emissions with a catalyst substrate, and releasing the results of said reaction from said shell.

    摘要: A bottom-feed, biomass material gasification system feeds fuel such as green and wet woodchips from below up through a central opening in a stationary, perforate fire table which supports the mound-like fuel bed which is formed. A plurality of ring-like air manifolds contiguously below the fire table, and surrounding the fuel supply tube are separately provided with air in a controlled manner according to the demand for the combustible gas produced, and a greater volume of air is supplied to the centralmost manifold, than to the outer manifold, or manifolds. The system includes, in addition to a primary heating chamber, a secondary heating chamber which receives the hot gases generated in the primary chamber and, via a centrifugal cyclonic action, combusts fly ash particles which may remain entrained in the gas, before passing the hot gases to the boiler burner for cumbustion. The atmosphere in the primary combustion chamber is partially starved, insofar as the supply of oxygen is concerned, and is maintained under a lower pressure than the gases which outlet from the primary chamber to the secondary chamber so that there is a continuous suction or draft pulling the hot gases generated in the primary chamber directly to the secondary chamber. An ash disposal system has paddles mounted on a rotary band bearing on the fire table for moving the ash which is generated from the perimeter of the fire table, when the ash build-up is sufficient to warrant it.

A pair of heat shields are spaced from opposing surfaces of a combustor to exchange thermal radiation with the combustor. The combustor is oriented at an acute angle to enhance the combustor life. One of the heat shields also functions as a deflector for deflecting exhaust toward the combustor. A secondary air unit supplies secondary air to the vicinity of the combustor. A dynamic grate assembly is employed to prevent under firing of the firebox.

    摘要: A dual stage combustion furnace has primary and secondary combustion chambers. The primary combustion chamber contains a solid fuel, such as wood or coal. The secondary combustion chamber is formed adjacent to and in communication with the primary combustion chamber for containing and igniting volatile combustion gases produced in the primary chamber. A plurality of hollow members, which provide a grate, extend through the primary chamber, and into the secondary chamber. Volatile gases given off in the primary combustion chamber are then ignited and burned in the secondary combustion chamber upon combination with heated air passing through the hollow grate members.

    摘要: The boiler comprises a primary furnace in which the combustion reactions are initiated, a secondary furnace extended by a radiating tube in which the combustion reactions are terminated, a heating surface disposed around the radiating tube and means for causing the combustion gases issuing from the radiating tube to pass into the annular space between the radiating tube and the heating surface. The secondary combustion radiating tube comprises two coaxial chambers, the first chamber terminating in a convergent part which directs the combustion gases toward the second chamber and the second chamber being closed at its end and having at its entrance a diameter larger than the diameter of the end of the convergent part so as to define with the end of the convergent part an annular opening through which the combustion gases injected into the second chamber are discharged. Means are provided for circulating the gases thus discharged in the annular space between said heating surface and the second chamber.

    摘要: Disclosed is a process for combusting coal containing more than 1 wt. % sulfur which process comprises (a) providing a coal containing more than 1 wt. % sulfur and containing an organically bound calcium to sulfur ratio of at least about 0.8 to 1, (b) burning the coal to about 80% to 95% carbon conversion at temperatures greater than about 1,100.degree. C. in a first combustion zone in the presence of an oxidizing agent but under reducing conditions such that the equivalence ratio of coal to oxidizing agent is less than 1.5 but greater than or equal to 1.0, (c) separating the resulting solid effluent from the gaseous effluent from the first combustion zone, and (d) burning the gaseous effluent at a temperature from about 1,000.degree. C. to about 1,500.degree. C. in a second combustion zone under oxidizing conditions. A substantial amount of the sulfur of the coal is captured in the resulting solid effluent.

    摘要: A sustained ignition secondary combustion apparatus in a housing of refractory insulating material includes a first level for conducting secondary air through a secondary air inlet and channel, and a second level for conducting smoke products. A partition separates the levels or zones. Openings are provided in the partition between the levels bounded by a high temperature porous or fiberlike material in the form of igniter tube elements. Secondary air and smoke products diffuse into the interstices of the porous or fiberlike material where contact and combustion maintains the igniter tubes at or above the ignition temperature. Ignition and secondary combustion of smoke products in the second level is therefore sustained and secondary air is preheated as it passes through the openings. A secondary combustion zone is defined in the region of the openings between the levels and continues down stream through the exhaust outlet. The first and second levels of the secondary combustion unit may be arranged in a variety of configurations for preheating of secondary air and primary smoke by counterflow with high temperature end products of secondary combustion. Multiple or tortuous pathways may be provided for extended preheating. Primary smoke may also be preheated by smoke preheating tubes. The invention is also applied in a downdraft furnace.

    摘要: A furnace system suitable for independent use and for retrofitting conventional central heating oil furnaces to permit controlled continuous and efficient combustion of fragmented wood type fuels. Wood chips or other fuel fragments are trickle fed into a refractory wood type combustion chamber. For retrofitting an oil furnace the oil burner gun is removed. A flame tube adapter couples the wood type fuel combustion chamber into the oil combustion chamber and heat exchanger plenum of the conventional furnace. The oil burner gun of the retrofitted furnace is used to ignite the wood chips or other fuel fragments during start up. A blower establishes forced draft. The furnace system includes automatic controls for sequencing operation of the elements of the retrofitting furnace system. An independent wood chip furnace system is also described.
